Celebrating the Lunar New Year

“Xīnnián kuàilè (Happy New Year).” Xīnnián kuàilè.
I think that's it. Xīnnián kuàilè.
Xīnnián kuàilè. It's the year of Rooster.
The new Chinese New Year is based on
a lunar calendar. It's just one of those of
twelve zodiacs in China. There's quite a lot of
variation and when it can happen. As
every animal mean something very lucky I think.
I was born in the States but my parents are from China.
I'm from Shanghai, China. I'm from China the southeast
China called, a city called Hung Jo. I'm from Atlanta,
Georgia. My parents are both from China. I'm from Beijing,
China. Chinese New Year is not a day,
it's like a period, so it lasts
like fifteen days and at the end of, in the
fifteenth day we have a Lantern Festival.
We always had a ton of food because
that's how Chinese parents show how much they
love you. So in different part of China
we celebrate differently and we usually have
different food. We usually ate a lot of
Chinese food like boiled dumplings and
noodles. In the north of China people
like to have dumplings but dumplings have become
a, mm, like a thing for everyone nowadays. I
actually help my mom make a lot of dumplings but I don't
like the boiled kind. I like pot stickers the best because
like anything fried is delicious.
We will like have reunion dinner and
watch the Spring Festival Gala on
television so this is my way of
celebrating. Together we make dumplings
and watch the Chinese Gala on CCTV.
There's not only food but also a lot
of traditions in China. There's this thing called
Red Packets where they give you like a
certain amount of money inside. It's basically
to wish you like very good fortune for the
New Year and to just basically symbolize like how much you
mean to them as well. We have
calligraphy. We hang on our doors.
We usually play some firecrackers.
Well, traditionally we celebrate like Chinese New Year
like by setting off firecrackers on our
backyards or on the street. That is a
way to get rid of some evil stuff and
it's very interesting to know. And like everybody
gives each other good wishes. We like make
plans for New Years together and it's just really
nice to see like old faces also meet new
families as well.
