a row sparked by the question of who will pay for a border wall.
The cancellation came as the spokesman for President Trump said the U.S. will seek a
tax on goods imported from Mexico and use the revenue to build the barrier.
The White House added that other options were on the table.
President Trump on Wednesday signed an executive order to build the wall.
He insists Mexico will foot the bill - which Republicans say could be twelve to 15 billion
U.S. dollars.
After learning that the Mexican leader had pulled out of next week's summit, President
Trump said the meeting would have been "fruitless" if Mexico didn't treat the United States "with
respect" and pay for the wall.
President Trump will hold talks with British Prime Minister Theresa May in Washington on
Friday.
It's his first summit with a foreign leader since his inauguration less than a week ago.
