is one of the UN's sustainable development goals for the year 2030.
In fact, the UN is working on ways... to help thousands of children and women in unstable
regions further themselves through learning, Oh Soo-young introduces to us these education
programs.
Some 16-thousand Iraqi students have finally returned to school, as fighting subsides in
parts of eastern Mosul.
The United Nations Children's Fund says around 30 schools have reopened after breaking free
of the two-year rule of the Islamic State.
"Every person should be educated and know how to read and write from the elementary
level.
If there's no education, there's no life, right?
Life must start with education.
When ISIS came, education vanished and life vanished.
Now thanks be to God, life is back."
The UN is helping local authorities equip and open up more schools by retraining teachers...
and providing water and sanitation services, along with school supplies for 120-thousand
students.
It expects 40 more schools to open in the coming weeks, accommodating about 40-thousand
students.
Ensuring free and equal access to education, especially for children, young people and
women, is one of the UN's 17 global goals, which aim to defeat poverty and attain sustainable
development in the world.
This includes increasing the number of young people and adults involved in technical and
vocational programs to help them gain socioeconomic opportunities and develop self-reliance.
Of the roughly three million displaced Syrians in Turkey, many women have lost their husbands
and fathers and now must provide a living for their families.
To help these women develop the skills to find work in modern clothing factories, the
UN Industrial Development Organization is providing a two-month training program in
textile production.
"When my husband died, I felt like everything had come to an end and all the doors had closed
in my face.
There was no hope.
When this training started, I realized I could provide if I learned something."
So far, more than 500 women have received training certificates issued by the Turkish
government, which permit them to work in one of Turkey's 50-thousand textile factories.
Through programs like these, the UN hopes to break down the barriers to quality education
by the year 2030, in order to empower vulnerable social groups, especially displaced persons
in conflict areas.
