The battle is expected to be a bigger challenge as the area has older, narrower streets and
is still home to hundreds of thousands of civilians.
Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi announced plans for the offensive
on state television, stressing the government forces were moving to liberate people from
terrorism forever.
Statements from the armed forces joint command say Iraqi police units are leading a northward
charge on the Mosul districts that lie west of the Tigris river, aiming to capture Mosul
airport.
They reportedly captured several villages and a local power distribution station in
the first hours and killed several militants.
