to check on a flock of sheep with
some historical significance.
President George Washington himself had this same breed,
known as Lester Longwools.
SARAH JANE SERVINSKI: Yeah, you're all right.
It's just me.
NARRATOR: Sarah, an official breeder,
is working to ensure they have a future worthy of their past.
SARAH JANE SERVINSKI: They are an endangered breed, in that
there's probably only about 1,000 of them
or so in the United States.
BRENDA GRETTENBERGER: They were almost
nonexistent 20 or 25 years ago.
NARRATOR: These five lambs have been
sold to an out-of-state buyer.
BRENDA GRETTENBERGER: Hi, how are you?
SARAH JANE SERVINSKI: There's our girl.
How are you, Doctor?
BRENDA GRETTENBERGER: Good.
NARRATOR: Each one must be examined by Dr. Brenda,
and declared medically fit to cross state lines.
BRENDA GRETTENBERGER: To go out of state,
the lambs will need interstate health certificates,
to just make sure we're sending a healthy animal
that's not going to spread disease from one state
to the next.
SARAH JANE SERVINSKI: I'm hoping that they're all healthy.
BRENDA GRETTENBERGER: All right, everybody hold still.
Got you. Hang on.
Hang on.
Hang on.
There.
Just sit here for a second, while I look at you.
We're looking at eyes, nose, ears, feeling for lymph nodes,
listening to heart and lungs, feeling reproductive organs.
SARAH JANE SERVINSKI: Oh, you're all right.
NARRATOR: If Dr. Brenda discovers signs
of an infectious disease, such as mange or tuberculosis,
the sale of the flock cannot go through.
[sheep burping]
SARAH JANE SERVINSKI: My goodness.
That's a growl.
BRENDA GRETTENBERGER: I think it was part burp.
Yeah, it was burp, I think, mixed in.
NARRATOR: They may not have the best table manners--
BRENDA GRETTENBERGER: We've got everybody look at now,
and everybody looks good.
SARAH JANE SERVINSKI: Great, OK.
NARRATOR: But at least they have a clean bill of health.
BRENDA GRETTENBERGER: Everybody's healthy.
Everybody's cleared to go on their trips.
SARAH JANE SERVINSKI: Thanks for coming.
BRENDA GRETTENBERGER: No problem.
You have a good day.
SARAH JANE SERVINSKI: Oh, you, too.
BRENDA GRETTENBERGER: Yeah.
SARAH JANE SERVINSKI: Always a pleasure to see Dr. Brenda,
but I'm even happier to know that the sheep are fine.
Yes, okay.
Well--
