man widely believed to be North Korean leader Kim Jong-un's half brother.
The discovery of this chemical agent, banned under international law, almost certainly
proves he was murdered.
For details we turn to Kwon Jang-ho.
The Royal Malaysian Police have confirmed that VX nerve agent was discovered on the
body of Kim Jong-nam, who was poisoned at Kuala Lumpur International Aiport almost two
weeks ago.
A preliminary report from the chemistry department on Friday, revealed the the deadly chemical
had been found on Kim's face and eyes.
This confirms reports that two female suspects had smothered something on Kim's face, whereupon
he fell ill and died in an ambulance on the way to the hospital.
VX is considered the most toxic, man-made chemical agent in the world, and it's only
use is in chemical warfare.
It is more powerful than sarin, and classified as a weapon of mass destruction by the United
Nations.
It's odorless and tasteless and it can be inhaled, ingested or absorbed through the
skin -- and it can kill in a matter of minutes.
Although it can cause an immediate reaction on contact with skin, it can be washed off.
This corroborates reports that the two attackers went to the bathroom immediately after the
incident to wash their hands.
But the potency of the substance affected at least one of them, as police revealed that
she had suffered from vomiting after the assault.
The Malaysian authorities have said they will call in experts to sweep Kuala Lumpur International
Airport, in case there are still traces of the chemical left.
The nature of the substance, and the fact that the police believe several North Korean
suspects are thought to be heavily involved, points the finger more squarely towards the
regime having a hand in the incident.
Pyongyang has vehemently denied this, accusing the Malaysian authorities of conspiring against
it with South Korea.
But Seoul has noted that such a denial is nothing new, with the regime yet to take responsibility
for the bombing of the Korean Air flight in 1987, and the sinking of the warship Cheonan
in 2010.
"Because they are not in a position to admit to their crimes, they have no choice but to
come out like this.
But they need to be aware that the more they act this way, the worse their image will become
in the international community."
Meanwhile, the chief of police dispelled earlier reports that Kim's family was on their way
to Malaysia.
He said his deputy had misquoted the information and that they were still waiting for family
members to come forward to officially verify the body's identity with a DNA test.
