You never start your day assuming the worst is going to happen, but sometimes that’s
just how the cookie crumbles.
Whether you’re out in the wilds of the world or in the comfort of your own home, these
ten strange facts could wind up meaning the difference between life and death… or, at
the very least, between comfort and extreme discomfort.
10.
Tuna Quite obviously, a can of tuna can save your
life if you find yourself in need of food, but these tiny aluminum cans can double as
a source of light.
To create this simple fishy flashlight, all you need is a can of tuna in oil, a rolled-up
piece of paper, and a means of lighting the paper.
Similar to the concept of a Molotov cocktail, you’ll puncture the top of the can and slip
the rolled paper into it, leaving a small wick on top.
After it has soaked up some of the oil, you’ll be able to light the paper, creating a makeshift
lantern to get you around in the dark for up to two hours.
What's even better, the tuna is still edible afterwards!
9.
Chewing Gum Believe it or not, that plain ‘ole pack
of Wrigley’s sitting in your drawer may serve more of a purpose than just covering
up the fact that you haven’t brushed your teeth in two days.
On top of being a stress reliever, chewing gum can also help fight fatigue and increase
alertness, quench your thirst – though it won’t replace a need for water - and suppress
your appetite.
Additionally, when you’re in a pinch and need to start a fire, gum wrappers can be
used to start a fire.
8.
Coconut Water For those of you lucky enough to ever find
yourself on a tropical island but unfortunate enough to have that experience marred by a
tragic occurrence, look to the coconut.
When the situation absolutely calls for it, and we mean true emergency situations, water
straight from the coconut can be used as an alternate of saline.
The practice of using coconut water intravenously dates back to World War II as a short-term
solution to replace water, implemented by the British and Japanese.
Though modern physicians recommend against using coconut water as a means of rehydration,
if the need calls for it, the option is definitely there.
7.
Super Glue The next time you slip with your knife and
leave a pretty nasty gash in your hand, don’t scream or panic.
Just reach for the super glue!
Should you not have the stomach or supplies to suture a wound closed, you can simply pinch
the wound closed and use a small amount of super glue to keep it from getting infected.
While it’s not recommended to use it to close really deep wounds, if the situation
calls for it, try to curb the bleeding before gluing the gash closed.
Of course, when applying glue to the affected area, be sparse in use and keep it from getting
inside the cut itself.
6.
Vinegar Vinegar is one of those surprisingly versatile
products that all can benefit from having in the home.
It serves as a cleaner, an odor eliminator and a means of reducing static cling, but
we’re concerned with how it can potentially save your life.
What makes it such a good cleaner is that it’s an antibacterial and antimicrobial
liquid which, if we apply it to medicinal purposes, can help prevent fresh wounds from
becoming infected or to keep an infection from spreading.
Simply add a few drops of vinegar to clean water, apply to the wound for ten minutes,
then dry and dress the afflicted area.
You may not smell the best afterwards, but at least you won’t die.
5.
Baking Soda Baking soda is best known for being a leavening
agent, meaning when you bake, your creation won’t come out as flat as it went in.
What you might not have known is that it’s also a suitable, temporary replacement for
a fire extinguisher during a small kitchen fire.
So long as a hellfire hasn’t spread throughout your home, the white powder can put out small
grease fires before they spread into a deadly inferno.
Baking soda will suffocate the fire, unlike water or other baking products, which may
just burn up or spread it further.
4.
Vodka After a long day, a glass or two or ten of
vodka can mean the difference between giving up and being able to go on, but that’s not
quite what we’re talking about when we say it may save your life.
On top of temporarily lifting your spirit, your favorite alcoholic beverage has quite
a few different uses.
Back in 2007, doctors implemented a vodka drip to save the life of an Italian tourist
that drank a deadly dose of ethylene glycol.
The pure alcohol helped to inhibit the glycol, saving the man’s life.
Vodka can also clean out small cuts and sterilize needles or blades in emergency situations.
If it’s warmth you’re in need of, don’t just drink the bottle, use it as a means of
starting a fire.
3.
Bra Cup Don’t space out yet, gentlemen.
This knowledge may benefit you one day.
The shape of a standard bra makes it a perfect substitute for a face mask when there’s
heavy debris in the air.
While it won’t replace a mask manufactured specifically for this purpose, it more than
comes in handy in a pinch.
Simply cover your mouth and nose with the cup of the bra and, if needed, use the strap
to tie it around your head and breathe normally.
You’ll be able to get a normal amount of air and avoid inhaling larger particles of
debris.
The bra will need to have a basic cup, so don’t try to use your girlfriend’s more
suggestive unmentionables.
2.
Tampons Everybody pay close attention – no matter
where you may find yourself, chances are you’re not too far from an unused tampon.
When the situation calls for it, you’ll be able to use this feminine product in a
multitude of ways, including as tinder to start a fire or as a bandage or compress on
a fresh wound.
The absorbent property keeps blood from getting everywhere while shielding the wound from
any infectious agents.
The cotton of a tampon can also be used to build a makeshift water filter and to pad
gloves and shoes for added warmth.
1.
Condoms More than just a suitable prophylactic, condoms
can also be a very multipurpose survival tool.
If you ever find yourself stuck in the wild, condoms can protect tinder from the elements
while also serving as suitable tinder itself!
The condom will burn for several minutes, giving you more than enough time to build
up the fire.
Condoms can also be used as a vessel for carrying water, though it may not taste the best, and
can double as a makeshift bobber for fishing.
So when your parents stumble across that box of Trojans, just tell them it’s for emergencies.
Or… maybe it’s best to plead
the fifth.
