- My name is Mike Winters.
I'm a third-year PhD student in Music Technology
at the Georgia Tech Center for Music Technology.
As an undergrad, I was a Physics and Music double major.
I played piano about three hours a day,
and, when I wasn't doing that,
I was active doing Physics research,
and one day it kind of clicked to me
how I could use music to convey information
about physics and about science
and it's really inspired me to go further in music
and do things with it that I never thought were possible.

I've been playing piano since I was seven-years old.
I'm 28 now.
I took about a year off, so I've been playing
for about 20 years.
Piano, obviously, means a lot to me.
I was a Piano Major in college,
and, since then, I've practiced for almost every day.
Continuing, and it just means a lot to be able
to continue to get better over time
and become more and more expressive
and have increased amount of controls
and expressive capacities with the instrument.
I play very much so that I can become a better pianist,
which means a lot of pain, practicing.
A lot of hard work goes into it,
and a lot of time is spent perfecting my touch
and my sound so that I can become a better pianist.

As a pianist at the Georgia Tech Center
for Music Technology,
we all have different sort of musical backgrounds
and musical experiences,
and it's really great to be on a campus,
and in a Music Department on a campus like Georgia Tech,
working on expressive and beautiful things
having to do with music.
