at Lakeside Shopping Center in 1988.

She was 13, I was only 11, she was way outta my league,
yet she invited me to the Lutheran Junior High Dance.
(audience laughs)
So, I put on my favorite outfit.
Black high-tops, no socks.
(audience laughs)
Jean shorts, little too tight.
(audience laughs)
And my trusty Spuds McKenzie t-shirt
which I hadn't washed for a week.
(audience cheers and laughs)
I walked inside that gymnasium and I was a foot shorter
than everyone else, including the girls.
(audience laughs)
It occurred to me I'm probably the only person
in this building who hasn't hit puberty.
But then the song played.
Can't Fight This Feeling.

R-E-O Speedwagon.

I was a romantic and this was one of my favorites,
and though I had to pubic hair to speak of...
(audience laughs)
I became a man in that moment.
(audience cheers and claps)
I strode across that dance floor
like Patrick Swayze in Dirty Dancing.
(audience laughs)
I leaned down and I said, "Will you dance with me?"
and she said yes.
And I took her hand and I led her
to the middle of the dance floor,
always leaving room for Jesus, of course.
(audience laughs)
And as we danced and the song swelled,
and the earth moved under my feet
I literally thought to myself, "We're gonna get married!"
(audience laughs)
Yet I noticed she was throwing furtive, giggly glances
to her friends in the corner so I became insecure
and did what any insecure 11 year old would do,
I started lying and bragging.
I told her that I was a very skilled drummer,
and she didn't believe me.
So I lied a little bit further, I said,
"You know, I'm like actually like,
a multi-instrumentalist and I can play all the instruments
and all the parts of this song.", none of which was true.
(audience laughs)
But, inexplicably, she came forward.
She kissed me on the cheek,
and she whispered in my ear
her phone number and said "Call me sometime."
I ran out of there running over and over
the phone number in my brain.
I was so excited that night I could barely sleep.
I was up at 5:00 a.m. but I waited until 8:30 a.m. to call--
(audience laughs)
So as not to seem too desperate.
(audience laughs)
And I punched in that number, and that phone rang.
And it was the wrong number.
