I’m Oli Davis, and I’m sorry this video is a bit late.
If you haven’t noticed, there’s load of wrestling.
This is my personal Top 10, and thus far from exhaustive.
Firstly, it’s only based on matches I’ve actually seen, and secondly, my tastes might
differ to yours.
As you’ll probably guess by the number one entry.
This is subjective.
That said, here are the definitive Top 10 Matches of February 2017.
10.
Tyler Bate vs Trent Seven, WWE NXT - 7/10 This was the first match on NXT using competitors
from January’s brilliant UK Championship tournament.
Tyler Bate defended his UK Title in a gripping, British strong-style bout against his longtime
friend Trent Seven.
This was incredibly fun, and the Full Sale crowd added tremendously to the atmosphere.
9.
Shibata vs Will Ospreay, NJPW New Beginning in Osaka - 7/10
This was almost the exact opposite of fun, for the competitors at least.
Shibata and Will Ospreay just hit each other really hard for 20 or so minutes.
The match progression was really well built, starting off with technical grappling, going
into the high-flying spots, and then the usual Shibata ‘I’m bloody hard, me’ inner
resolve bits near the end.
8.
The Bullet Club vs CHAOS & The Briscoes, ROH/NJPW Honor Rising 2017 Night 1 - 8/10
Back to the fun.
This six man tag between Kenny Omega, Cody Rhodes and the Young Bucks against Kazuchika
Okada, Will Ospreay and The Briscoes was hugely entertaining.
But beneath the comedy spots - including a great six boot set-piece in the corner - was
the six star rivalry between Okada and Omega bubbling away.
7.
Fatal 5 Way No.1 Contender’s Match, WWE 205 Live - 8/10
This is what the Cruiserweight division should be - a fast-paced clash of styles.
Mustafa Ali and TJ Perkins brought high-flying athleticism, Cedric Alexander and Noam Dar
brought strong style strikes and Jack Gallagher brought his technical ability.
The commentary from Aries, Graves and Ranallo was brilliant too.
This was a match so good, they didn’t just get the crowd into 205 Live, they made them
chant ‘This is awesome’.
6.
Smackdown Elimination Chamber Match, WWE Elimination Chamber - 8/10
The padded Elimination Chamber floor aside, this match somehow managed to make everyone
look strong.
Nobody was hurt by their eliminations.
And the best part - aside from the result - was The Miz being terrified of Baron Corbin.
Many different stories and feuds were very efficiently built in this match.
5.
John Cena vs AJ Styles vs Bray Wyatt, WWE Smackdown Live - 8/10
Never have I seen the placement of commercial breaks actually add to a television match.
The WWE Championship fight was chaotic from the start, with the lights coming up after
Bray Wyatt’s entrance to reveal Luke Harper laying in weight.
Mauro Ranallo throws to commercials like his life depends on it.
We come back and AJ Styles is just about to put Wyatt through a table.
This was non-stop action with a very hot crowd.
4.
Hiromu Takahashi vs Dragon Lee, NJPW New Beginning in Osaka - 8/10
It was almost as though Takahashi and Dragon Lee said ‘gravity, hold my beer’ before
this match - because Newton’s most famous discovery did not show up for this fight.
It was like a greatest hits of high-spots.
3.
Tetsuya Naito vs Michaels Elgin, NJPW New Beginning in Osaka - 9/10
That show’s main event, however, somehow managed to top them.
The infinitely cool Naito told a brilliant story purely through physicality against Michael
Elgin.
Show, don’t tell - that’s the golden rule of storytelling.
Naito underestimated Elgin, and the match worked through the various struggles stemming
from that mistake.
2.
The Festival of Friendship, WWE Raw - 10/10 In only the second video of my Best Matches
of the Month series, I’ve already managed to ruin the premise.
Yes, Chris Jericho and Kevin Owen’s Festival of Friendship segment on Raw is my 2nd favourite
match of February.
It might not be an actual match, but it had all the twists and turns of a great bout.
Starting off with actually laugh out loud comedy, then transitioning seamlessly into
a heartfelt shoot from Jericho saying this run with Owens is one of his career favourites,
and then the moment we all grew up a little: ‘Why’s my name on here?’
I think it’s the best gimmick segment Raw has ever done.
1.
Kazuchika Okada vs Minoru Suzuki, NJPW New Beginning in Sapporo - 10/10
For the second video in a row, Kazuchika Okada managed to have my favourite match of the
month.
From what I’ve seen, the consensus is that Naito and Elgin outshone this one, and that
Okada and Suzuki maybe went on a bit too long.
I obviously disagree.
This was almost a piece of endurance performance art than an actual match.
The length was what made it so epic.
Suzuki worked over Okada’s knee for practically 40 minutes.
That’s ages.
But it worked.
I was completely engrossed throughout.
When everyone was screaming at Okada to give up when Suzuki had him locked in the match’s
20th knee bar - including the referee - that’s up there with some of my most cherished wrestling
memories.
