that attitude is everything I'll bet you
have i've heard many say that in fact
they'll say something like if you can
believe it you can achieve it and that
never quite rang true with me so i began
to press the issue and i have come the
conclusion that attitude isn't
everything now I'm not disclaiming or in
any way being disparaging about attitude
because I think attitude is very
important but if anybody comes up to you
tells you that attitude is everything I
don't buy it that that's not true for
example attitude can't replace in
confidence if you're incompetent you can
be very happy but you can still be very
unsuccessful now here's what I do know
attitude isn't everything but attitude
is the main thing that'll make a
difference in your life because I
believe that I wrote the book the
difference maker you see that's what
attitude is attitude is the difference
maker you have two people side by side
that you're thinking about employing
your company both of them have the same
background same job description
education experience I mean you can
almost flip a coin in second hire the
wet one on the right or I could hire the
one on the left but one has a great
attitude and one has a bad attitude now
who you want to hire you're going to
hire the person with a great attitude
why because it was the difference-maker
I see everyday people with this
mentality that the world owes them
something and it's popular now to talk
about entitlement and everybody deserves
and all these different things that
people like to bitch and cry about but
people come at life with the wrong
attitude okay and and they don't like
hearing the truth and the truth of the
matter is this the world owes you
nothing the world doesn't think you're
special like your mom does it doesn't
think you're a delicate little flower it
doesn't
care about you now with that being said
the world doesn't hate you it doesn't
want you to fail it just is okay and I
see so many people going through their
life with this overwhelming feeling of
either a the world owes me something or
be the world hates me and the reality is
it's neither and what's common amongst
this group of people that I find is that
both these groups of people that I find
is that they're missing the
understanding of what it means to be
successful and let me let me get at
exactly what the cause of this is
because this is their selfish they're
self-centered their self focused they're
only worried about what they see in the
mirror and they go around through their
daily life trying to manipulate the
world in a way that's going to serve
them but here's the thing guys if that's
the way you go through life if you go
through life trying to figure out a way
for the world to get you something for
you to be successful and you know at the
expense of others or for you to get
ahead at the expense of others your
success or any success that you're able
to build or momentum you're able to
build is going to be very short-lived
guys and that's that's not the right way
to do things okay that's why you see the
same people you know who make money real
fast lose money real fast that's why you
see the same people who you know have a
little bit of success and then go back
to the way they were and then they might
find a new quote unquote thing to do and
they make a little bit of money and they
go back to the way they were and and the
problem with this mentality guys is that
it's a mentality that is not of service
okay and if you want to be truly
successful in life you have to be
selfless and you have to understand that
being selfless and being of service to
other people is the only true way to
find long-term success life is life life
is
is an interesting journey of ups and
downs but how that journey ends is up to
you today you see when you fall down and
you feel like giving up when times get
tough it's not the end the question is
are you going to finish strong the
definition of a disability is something
that will hinder you from being able to
do something I think though the greatest
disability is not having no arms no legs
the greatest disability is your mind the
choices that you make the question is
are you going to make the right choices
are you going to make the choice to have
your life in its right perspective are
you going to make the choice to get up
instead of give up you're going to make
the choice to dream be there is no
greater disability that we have in our
lives then to make the decision to give
up because once you give up then there
is no hope but until you give up there
is that whole
my passion is to encourage people to
inspire people to be all that they can
be I found my purpose I found my
strength and I want you to find yours
don't be afraid of failing every time
you fall down every time you fail you
learn something new you're ready for the
next one you've learned how not to do
something well then learn from it and
move on leave what's behind and press
forward you can only win if you don't
give up go for it don't let anything
hold you back if nothing's holding me
back what's holding you back no goal is
too big no dream is too far-fetched it's
as big as you can dream it
there are times in life where you don't
see the purpose or the good in your
situation but just because you can't see
it it doesn't mean it's not coming who
goes to the train station looks down the
railway into art the trains on here I'm
leaving you will wait for the Train why
because the schedule says that the train
is coming so just because you can't see
the hole in your situation it doesn't
mean that it's not there you see many
people think that I have only one foot
just because you can't see the other one
I've gone from a life without limbs into
a life without limits what about you
acknowledging your results of gratitude
and generosity and the affirmation for
this principle is I am deeply thankful
for all that I've received and I enjoy
giving to others in the spirit of love
and service this is a very important
part not only of being able to have show
up in your life what it is that is
the fulfillment of your heart's desire
but it is also a beautiful way to begin
living your life every day there's an
old saying that says that you're not
generous when it hard you will not be
generous when it easy
and generosity isn't necessarily the
giving away of what you have but it's
more of a attitude of spirit as his
gratitude so there are really three
components to this eighth principle the
first is gratitude the second is
generosity and the third his service let
me take them one at a time here the
first his gratitude and I remember
reading a book few years back by a
friend of mine if name is Dan Millman I
believe dan has a program with Nike
O'Connor wonderful speaker and he wrote
a book called up the way of the peaceful
warrior and in the way of the peaceful
warrior he had this character who was an
enlightened kind of being and in Dan's
the book the way of the peaceful warrior
this character's name was Socrates and
Socrates was fella who worked in a gas
station but he could do all of these
bizarre kinds of things he could jump up
onto a roof 14 feet in the air by just
transporting himself and he has this
ability to make himself disappear and to
change his shape and do many of the
things that most of us because most of
us are cookie thieves believed somehow
that we can't do these things and we
know a truth and we are attached to that
true that this was the only dimension
there is and there are no other
dimensions that I can get involved in or
peer into because my senses have told me
this and we've come to put an
extraordinary amount of faith in these
census which was lead us all the time
about reality so Socrates was one of
these people who was living in a
different dimension a different level of
consciousness so Socrates tells his
student
to go out onto a rock and sit until he
can think of something important and
come back and tell him something
important or something significant
unbelievable and he goes out there the
student goes out there Dan telling his
own story and he sits there on a rock
and he's just there every time he thinks
he's got something that's really
important then he thinks about telling
Socrates as he realizes how unimportant
it is so after sitting there for a long
period of time than finally after going
to Socrates and telling him things and
sacrifices now that's not important back
he will go to the rock and he did this
two or three times now that's not that
enough significance and go back to her
so finally he came and he said something
in Socrates let's book you've got it you
have discovered something significant
and that something significant was he
said to him there are no ordinary
moments there are no ordinary moments
the sacrifices yes that's significant
that is a great teaching a great
learning and that's really the essence
of gratitude the essence of gratitude is
understanding that every moment of your
life is something to be grateful for and
that everything that shows up in your
life is something that you will want to
be expressing a sense of gratitude about
I speak often about how we take things
for granted and taking things for
granted is one of the obstacles to
having an attitude of gratitude taking
things for granted very often I mean
I've often said that I think we should
have special days every year which we
appreciate all the different aspects of
our being you know like we give thanks
for our liver on Monday you know on the
third of January liver appreciation day
you know or just try to imagine what it
would be like if you didn't have that
liver there would be nothing for you to
imagine and then you know for the air
that we breathe
and for the ground that we walk upon and
for gravity and for the food that we
have and for the sky and for you know
our eyelids which we just take for
granted without them how difficult it
would be for us to get through even an
hour of our day and our toenail and and
everything about ourselves to begin to
experience a sense of gratitude now when
we're talking about affirmations and
we're talking about manifestation here
we want to look at what it is we are
asking to have manifested for ourselves
and remember we are not creating
anything we're just redistributing if
you will everything that needs to be
created is already in the universe
there's no place to go I remember when
the story was told of Swami moved Ananda
great spiritual teacher who was dying
all of his devotees and students but
gathered around and he was leaving and
he had announced that his students were
praying with him and they were pleading
with him please don't go please don't go
sonically were not ready for you to
leave and he opened his eyes looked at
them and said don't be silly where could
I go
where is there to go everything is
already here and so when you are
manifesting and you are asking for
things to show up in your life and they
begin to show up in your life learning
to be grateful for this now that's not
so difficult most of us say thank you I
have a little ritual that I do every day
and that is almost every day God sends
money to me in some form particularly
when I'm running happens virtually every
day of my life and it's a little game I
have mental game that I have played with
myself I'll be out running and I'll be
thinking about all of the abundance that
has shown up in my life and how grateful
I am how grateful I am to have my
children one of the things that my wife
and I practice regularly is telling our
children how fortunate we feel to be
their parents a lucky we're not how
lucky they are to have us as parents but
how blessed and how grateful we are and
I'll often pick up my little boy or one
of my little girls and just put my arms
around her you know I am really lucky to
have you I'm really blessed to have you
show up in my life I feel that way about
almighty and having that kind of
attitude is something that I do with
everything that has shown up in my life
because I lived a big hunk of my life
without a lot of abundance with a great
deal of scarcity but even while I was
living in scarcity there was never a
sense of poor me or I wish I had more or
even looking at other people and saying
they've got it and I don't that attitude
keeps you from being grateful for what
you have even as a child I didn't learn
to say Oh they've got a Cadillac and I
have to we have to drive around in an
old Chevy or something there was sort of
an internal knowing that you haven't
earned a Cadillac
that isn't something that you even think
about as being yours they used to talk
about being able to buy a Cadillac when
I was a young man we're going to buy my
first car and they sent a Cadillac cost
almost four thousand dollars I couldn't
comprehend a Cadillac costing four
thousand dollars and having four
thousand dollars to buy a car I mean it
wasn't like something I would even give
a moment's notice to if other people had
that that that was just their karma
there was their benefits or somehow they
had done something to earn that you know
today when i go to buy a car four
thousand dollars is an option you want
this stereo system instead of this one
that costs four thousand actually a
light throw it in what do i do I it's
got extra speakers I mean I mean my
first car was an owl 1950 Plymouth that
had you know rusted out sides on it and
and I watched that thing every day and I
was so crowded I was so excited about it
and the idea of looking at somebody
else's new car and thinking that there
was something wrong here that they had
it and I didn't couldn't have occurred
to me and I believe it's that attitude
of being grateful for whatever shows up
in your life that allows additional
things to show up in your life and my
little ritual that I play every day when
I'm out running is a little coins that I
find in the street
I found one this morning when I was
running before i made this presentation
right out in front of the of the hotel a
penny shiny penny and you know i have a
never admitted this in public before but
i have a large jar of coins that is
hidden behind in a bookcase behind a
hole nobody knows where this is except
myself and this contains all of the
money that i have found in the last 20
years and it's a huge amount of money
some of it is wrinkled up build a lot of
it is foreign money because i've run in
foreign countries and most of the coins
are dirty and they've been out on the
street for a long time and there's a
couple of twenty dollar bills there's a
hundred-dollar bill in there and every
time I look at that that little symbol
that just keeps growing it reminds me to
be grateful and when I pick up one of
those coins i always say thank you God
for this symbol of abundance that has
shown up in my life thank you and I put
it in my pocket and I put it away in a
statue and when I get back to my office
but I go to that little place and I put
it in there and I look at that and
that's my reminder what gratitude does
is it keeps you connected to that source
which brings things into your life it
keeps that connection open
