Narrator: Today on GT Spotlight,
we visited the Video Game Development Club's
End of Semester Showcase.
We decided to follow our insider and trusty associate
and best friend, Mitch McClellan.
Mitch McClellan: Hello!
Today on GT Spotlight, we're going to be visiting
the Video Game Development Club, or VG Dev for short.
At the end of every semester, VG Dev does a campus demo
where we have lots of pizza and lots of games.
It's really fun.
James Lee: VG Dev, it stands for Video Game Development,
and it is a student organization on Georgia Tech.
And essentiatlly what we do is make games within one semester.
Narrator: Our first game, Turret Wars!
Go head-to-head against one other person
in this online turret-based battling game.
Student: So the way the game works is there's two sets
of turrets on either sides of the mythical plane,
and they send units at each other.
You only have so much money, right?
And you try to get more money.
The only way to get more money is to kill things
and to hire things.
For a more concrete explanation, left-click is shoot.
Right-click is change weapon.
And the number keys will send units.
And he's already ahead.
Mitch McClellan: Yeah, you know, I like to do that to give
the opponent the false sense of security.
Student: You didn't lose a single life there,
so that's actually kind of impressive.
Narrator: Up next, we have this game!
Master the art of musical magic combat and destroy your friends
or AI in this top-down brawler.
Mitch McClellan: This is Kartik.
He's the president of the club, and this is his game,
Bardmage Arena.
Kartik: You are a bard. And you are a mage.
You cast your spells by playing music and tunes.
[game music] ♪♪
Kartik: I will say I have an unfair advantage
that I have all these tunes memorized.
Mitch McClellan: Woah!
Kartik: Oh, yeah. The scoreboard got a little bit broken.
James Lee: If we give the go for them to at least present
the project, then people get to hear it
on our weekly Friday meetings.
Say, "Oh, hey, I want to work on a project."
And people just sign up.
The team leaders get to propose a time that everyone else meets,
and that's where they start working.
From there, it's up to their own complete freedom.
Narrator: Bit.Spike is a room scale virtual reality game
in which a play a small group of mercenaries defending their ship
from an evil robot invasion.
Mitch McClellan: Oh! Stop it!
They look huge! Holy crap! [laughter]
James Lee: We are pretty much looking for anyone
who is alive and from Georgia Tech.
That's pretty much it.
And because this is not necessarily-
Oh, we need programmers or we need artists.
I mean, of course we do.
But this is for people who want to at least contribute
in whatever way they can, whether they're professionals
or completely new.
I know that when I first came in, I had
very little skill other than just drawing,
and now I actually can do programming,
3D modeling, texturing, level design,
pretty much a lot of different things.
Mitch McClellan: Haha, take advantage of your snoozing!
Kartis: Oh, no! You got half my health!
[game music] ♪♪
Mitch McClellan: Dang it! I'm so close.
It's ridiculous.
James Lee: Since this is done during the school semester,
lots of people need to work on homework,
mid-terms, finals.
And when teams start to slim down a little bit
after the semester goes on,
then we have to also know how to do our resources once again.
And just essentially make things work
until we make a complete game.
Mitch McClellan: Bye, Kartik.
Goodbye, I no longer want to be a part of this.
[laughter]
And the winner is... Kartik. Oh, no!
Kartik: That's me!
[game music] ♪♪
James Lee: We have daily memes.
We also have free pizza and t-shirts to members.
Pizza is to everyone on the campus demo,
but t-shirts, yeah, free.
Lots of free stuff, as well as being able to have experience,
to build a portfolio with a lot of these video games,
and you can show it to other interviewers at least.
And there's also the opportunity for you to make friends
and just have fun.
Mitch McClellan: That was really fun.
I only won, like, once, but those are some good games.
