2017 Mercedes Benz GLS Review by AutoTopNL

At AutoTopNL we're always looking for
cars with an overkill
and
normally that's
cars with lots of power
an overkill of power
but now we have an overkill in size!
The Mercedes GLS!
And we've met before!
the predecessor
the GL
as 63 AMG
we were both in love
with that monster of a car
Which is called "the tank" in the office
fantastic car
it's now called GLS
To make sure you know what they represent
GL models
with the GLA, GLC, GLE and GLS
and that last letter
tells you what kind of quality level
you can expect
GLA , A Class
GLE, E Class
and this GLS
should be like an S Class SUV
OK, the size
it's the first thing to discuss
with this car
When I think about big cars
I think about
A Land Rover Discovery
what a beast, a tank!
This car is 30cm longer!
which is like this much..
absurd..
You can really seat 7 adults
Which I have done
It's actually doable with 7 adults
And now the hippies
will start bad mouthing this car
Because of the emissions
Maybe that's less than you think
Because
If you go on vacation as a group
You always need two cars
when you fit 4/5 persons in a car
with luggage..
You need a second car..
Not with this car!
Space, Space
and space..
It's the motto of this car
It's just very big..
The car drives and feels
as you want it to
It's loose
comfortable
a bit wobbly
it moves around you
A very big hood
with some nice angles in it
You really feel like the king of the road
There's nothing bigger than this
It's like being the king of a bouncy castle on wheels
that's the best description..
But on the inside it's all less royal..
The GLS should be S class level
but the interior
is disappointing
finishing and materials..
it's quite hard and plastic
can you hear this?
Nothing like the S class!
Not even close..
Talking about finishing
There's one thing which drives me crazy
the exhausts..
I once criticized the Peugeot 308 GT
because it had two exhausts
and one was completely closed
the GLS has two as well
and they are BOTH closed
And Mercedes is not ashamed of this
Because it's even in the brochure!
look at that plastic grill
totally unacceptable!
We don't have a 63 AMG this time
but a 350 Diesel
with 258 HP
I thought
A car with that weight
258 HP..
That's not going to be enough
But..
torque!
620 NM of it..
Which is a lot..
The engine has no trouble
keeping pace
It can even do 7.8 seconds to 100 km/h
Which is quick
And it's also because of the nine gears
of the new gearbox
for the GLS
The strange thing is
I really have some critical points
Which I find unbelievable for such an expensive car
mainly finishing..
But it still manages to capture me!
In this colour..
It looks awesome!!
In blue with black accents
21 inch rims
They don't even look that large
So
the GLS
It still has
that magic
which I also felt in that GL63 AMG
But
The changes are quite small
It feels like a facelift
in stead of a new model
with a new badge
Supposedly
there's going to be a Maybach version
and
I hope they can then make it S class level
Because there is some work left
But as I said
driving a GLS
Is like driving a fort
But not one with a D
