to a lost world that was once believed to be a myth, These are 5 mysterious lost worlds.
Lets Begin.
1)
Every year, hundreds of thousands of people from all over the world visit the famous Angkor
Wat temple in Cambodia. Angkor Wat is the largest religious monument in the world, four
times larger than Vatican city, measuring an enormous 402 acres in size and is 699 feet
in height. In the 12th century, it was at the heart of a city that homed over 1 million
people. It survived invasions and wars, and it's basically an architectural masterpiece,
but it gets even better. In 2015, Archaeologists were shell shocked when their laser Technology
revealed a huge network of ancient cities in the cambodian jungle that has been hidden
for about 1200 years near the Angkor Wat temple. Using the laser technology, archaeologists
discovered that there were ancient roads and canals underneath the jungle ground. How cool
is that? Millions of people throughout the years have been visiting Angkor Wat, not knowing
that beneath their feet is a vast hidden ancient city, belonging to the largest empire on earth
in the 12th century, the Khmer empire.. The temple is so complex, famous for it's beautifully
carved sculptures, but Even recently, in 2014, scientists discovered 200 ancient paintings
that were found in chamber one, paintings of animals, boats and people. It always amazes
me how ancient civilizations were able to build such huge and complex buildings such
as this with the lack of technology that we have today. It was even built on floating
water, yet it still stands over 1000 years later.
2)
for over a thousand years, it's location remained hidden. In the cliffs of Jordan lies one of
the most magnificent cities of the ancient world, Petra. It's huge temple measuring over
100 feet in height was literally carved from the sandstone cliffs of southern Jordan. Due
to the colour of the stone of which was carved, Petra is also known as Rose City. In it's
peak, over 2000 years ago, Petra was at the centre of an advanced trading network and
home to over 30,000 people. Due to the city being home to so many people, their survival
was maintained by a complex water system. It was also protected by fortress like cliffs
and even thousands of years later, it was proteted by tribes that would fiercely protect
it's secrets. In 1812, a swiss explorer, Johann burckhardt risked his life by disguising himself
as an arab pilgrim to search for the legendary city, that at the time no outsider for over
600 years has seen the city. This is where he saw a monumental canyon that was about
600ft in height. He had to walk about a mile before nearing the end of the canyon, where
it then widens to reveal the temple that is carved into the cliffs. Built 2000 years ago
it's an architeral and engineering masterpiece. Just look at how huge the doorway is. The
city was actually about 4 times larger than modern Jordan and had incredible wealth through
it's trading system. Now for you Indiana Jones fans, Indiana Jones and the last crusade was
partly filmed at the ancient city of Petra.

I personally just love reading about hidden places that have been found that are just
so beautiful and mysterious, that you can't help but be in awe of such a place. Well on
August 2015, this part of the cave that is believed to be an extension of the cave Hang
Tien was discovered for the first time near Phong nha ke bang national park in Vietnam.
Sorry if I mispronounced the location, but just look at the photos. It is amazing. The
photos show that the cave was once full of water, where the water has left beautiful
black and white markings on the cave walls. It also has unique rock formations on the
ground where small gours go on for hundreds of metres. The person who took the photos
said he felt like he was on a complete different planet. The National park has got to be one
of the most beautiful places in the world. It contains some of the oldest karst mountains
in Asia, that are said to of formed about 400 million years ago that have hundreds of
cave systems and underground rivers that are surrounded by jungles.
4)
Satellite images show that on top of the mountain range in Australia lies a rainforest, a world
that has been hidden for millions of years, where it's surrounded by nearly impassable
huge chunks of granite that has helped isolate the rainforest. It's this reason why only
a few people have ever set foot on the rainforest as the only way to get there is by helicopter.
Well On March 2013, a team of scientists and filmmakers for the national geographic travelled
by helicopter on top of Melville range, a mountain that is 9 miles long, which some
of you will know as 15km long. On their expedition they discovered the rainforest has it's own
unique ecosytem, where new species of gecko's, frogs and skinks have adapted to live near
the huge boulders. No where else in the world can these species be found. The new specie
of leaf gecko for example has longer legs than other geckos, most likely because it
needs longer legs to climb up the tall rocks. The Blotched Boulder-frog stays in the shadeded
areas of the boulders in the dry season, and then in the wet season it feeds and breeds
on the boulders. It's believed these species, isolated from other parts of the world could
be over1 million years old.
5)
7 kilometres further out from the coast of Egypt, Northeast of Alexandria, lies a giant
secret deep in the oceon. For thousands of years it was believed to be a legend, A city
of incredible wealth wth giant statues and temples that was visited by the likes of Helon
Of Troy before the trojan war. For the past two thousand years though, this so called
legendary city, Thonis has mysteriously disappeared.
For over 30 years, marine archaeologist, Frannk Goddio was obsessed to finding out if this
lost ancient city was a myth or an historical fact. It was only in the year 2000 when Goddio
eventually found his greatest and most important discovery. Deep in the oceon, Goddio and his
team started excavating deep in the oceon where they believed the lost city once was.
This is where they found a foundation of a huge wall, three metres thick, made of limestone
blocks. It was later found out that the wall was over 330 ft long, suggesting that it belonged
to the largest temple found in the region so far. The monumental scale was so large
that it persuaded Goddio that he had discovered the Serapeum of Canopus, a temple dedicated
to the Greco-Egyptian god Serapis. Not so far away, a colassol huge red granite statue
of a Ptolemaic queen, that is 4.9 metres high and weighing an incredible 4 tons, was found
close to the great sunken temple. These statues were so large that the team had great difficulty
getting them out of the oceon. Now if you're thinking was there actually any gold found,
any treasure, then yes, gold coins and other gold artifacts were discovered and are on
show at exhibitions with other well preserved articfacts. One thing I can't get out of my
head was just how large this city once was. You've all most likely heard of
, well the lost city of Thonis would have been about three times the size of Pompeii,
that's how large it was.
It's believed the city was submerged underwater due to natural disasters such as earthquakes
and tidal waves. It's quite a scary thought, but in hundreds of years time due to rising
sea levels, coastal cities such as Shangai, New york city, Manhattan and thousands of
other cities around the world share the same destiny in that they will all be submerged
underwater.
