Welcome to this week’s episode of “Post-game Review”.
I am your professor, DSM.
In the blink of an eye,
The annual Mid-season Invitational has already concluded.
Despite heavy expectations,
Our LPL team once again ended the tournament at the semi-finals.
WE lost in a BO5 to a team that they have beaten before, G2.
That felt really bad.
However, failure is the mother of success.
The journey will continue.
In this week's Post-game Review,
Let’s take a look at what strategies we learned from G2.
For those of you that are familiar with G2,
You would know that in a BO5 scenario,
G2 generally performs very stably,
Makes few mistakes, and excels at playing the late game.
This strongly correlates with their champion picks and team comps.
In their confrontation against WE,
G2 picked a “diving team-fight composition”,
Securing them the crucial second game victory.
Let’s review this match.
First, let’s talk about what is a diving team-fight composition.
It’s not simply 5 people rushing at you.
There are multi-pronged attacks, synergistic movements,
And team formations.
There are 3 important elements:
Initiation, crowd control (CC), and tankiness.
Generally speaking, starting a teamfight requires a sufficient amount of CC
To lock down enemy champions,
And enough tankiness to avoid getting focus fired and instantly killed,
While waiting for the ally carries to arrive and do damage.
This kind of team comp. would provide the carries with a great DPS environment.
Even if you try to lose the teamfight, it would be difficult.
Of course, how good the team comp. becomes depends on the farm.
Now, let’s talk about this game bit by bit.
When this game started, WE was playing very tricky.
Since Olaf started at his Raptors,
He didn’t have a ward at his Red Buff.
Consequently, Lee Sin was able to steal it from him after starting blue.
Afterwards, Lee Sin tried to contest Olaf’s topside jungle,
Trying for a 4-buff start.
But at this moment,
You can see that WE’s midlaner and jungler were not on the same page.
Lee Sin wanted to continue to invade,
But Taliyah wanted to return to lane and continue to farm.
They paid a costly price for this divergence.
This move is errr...
Hard fight for Olaf without Blue Buff.
Olaf used Ghost. He wants to fight.
This is dangerous for Condi.
The enemy midlaner arrived first.
He dodged it. Rumble is here.
Ward jump, but he got taunted.
After Syndra got the double buff,
Taliyah faced the dilema where she could neither fight nor outpush the Syndra.
She got pinned under tower, unable to go anywhere.
Lee Sin’s jungle clearing efficiency also got affected,
Resulting in him being 1 step late to the botlane gank,
Late on every step.
He was unable to arrive at the botlane in time to provide support.
Thus, the mid and jungle tempo became worse and worse.
Afterwards, the small disadvantage was continuously snowballed.
A team comp. that was supposed to snowball during the laning phase
Was pinned under the tower instead.
That felt really bad, you know.
Finally, both sides decided to start teamfighting early.
At this point, G2’s diving team-fight composition is starting to show its effectiveness.
Let’s look at the teamfight at the 18th minute.
WE’s 5-man squad is fighting the Dragon.
Suddenly, an Olaf appears.
Even with no allies within the 1500-unit radius,
The Olaf wielding two axes would still dare to chase you.
This is the legendary beefy engager that will charge into 5 people by himself.
But in this fight, WE could only run away while getting hit by the Olaf.
Two members also got locked down.
Rumble’s ultimate was mediocre.
Lee Sin got killed immediately.
Quickly, escape with Blasting Cone.
957’s Flash was unnecessary.
Feels like these two would have a hard time escaping.
E over the wall. It hits.
Cleansed. He escaped.
So let’s rewind and take a look at why G2’s formation could charge into WE's face
Despite both sides have apparently equal levels and farm.
Let’s explain using the aforementioned 3 elements of a diving team-fight comp.
The first point is initiation.
An Olaf using Ghost
With his Ultimate that makes him CC immune
Can definitely start a teamfight, as long as he is not afraid of death.
He can also easily provide an ideal entry point for the Galio.
The second point is tankiness.
Doesn’t matter how tanky Olaf is, he cannot withstand the focus fire from 5 people.
However, it’s a completely different story if we add Galio’s ultimate.
This would make Olaf’s tankiness rival that of Alistar’s.
The third point is crowd control.
One aspect is that Olaf can continuously slow his enemies with his axes.
Another aspect is that after Galio lands from his ultimate,
Galio’s knock-up and taunt can also lock down enemies.
Therefore, faced against this chain of CCs,
WE’s 5 players has no choice but to separate.
Because if they fought, there are still Syndra’s balls or Varus’s ultimate from G2.
WE could only leave behind their knocked-up toplaner and jungler to die.
This appears to be a very easy initiation,
But the team coordination was meticulous.
With how the teamfights turned out, the game became very difficult for WE.
At the point, the biggest comeback factor is the Rumble.
If Rumble can place a perfect ultimate, then WE has a chance in teamfights.
At the 21st minute of the game,
WE fought a very ideal teamfight.
Despite a perfect combination of Taliyah’s and Rumble’s ultimates,
They were still unable to win the teamfight.
Rumble’s ultimate. Ashe is going to use ultimate.
Lee kicked two people.
The ultimate placement was not bad.
Very good Rumble ultimate, can it fry one person?
Mithy didn’t die.
Is he going to burn to death?
Wow…the balls hit three people.
A lot of damage, but Rumble also fried one person.
A 2 for 1. Too bad for WE. Wasn’t able to kill the botlane duo.
In this teamfight, we can see that Rumble’s ultimate was placed perfectly,
But the follow-up DPS could not get in range
Due to the lockdown effect from Varus’s R and Syndra’s E abilities.
There’s a small detail here.
The Syndra got hit by an Ashe arrow.
If Syndra didn’t get stunned,
Then WE’s two carries would both get killed,
Resulting in perhaps an earlier end to the game.
This team composition, whether it is for frontal diving and locking down people
Or countering aggression using CC as protection,
Is really strong.
After this teamfight, it would be very difficult for WE to try to win.
If WE cannot kill G2’s two carries in a teamfight,
Then direct teamfights become nearly impossible.
This is the difference between the team comps.
WE could only attempt to capitalize on the enemy’s mistakes,
Using wave control to delay time.
But if WE cannot solve the problem of Olaf and Galio diving from the front,
Ultimately they would die a slow death.
Trick is charging at WE's face.
There is latern here. Save Xiye first.
What is 957 going to do?
957 is alright, he got Zhonya’s and Flash.
He used Flash.
The enemy Galio…
Perkz is coming in from the back.
Oh my god, this guy’s positioning is too scary.
He used the Q ability.
Double kill. A 3 for 1.
Galio TPs to the back.
They are going to get aced.
Ah this is really the end.
Wow, G2 really played well today.
Excellent tempo.
It is not difficult to see from this game that
G2 has improved greatly in the days after the group stage.
With sufficient pre-game preparations, they created a team comp. that is resilient.
Although WE banned Olaf in game 4,
G2 was still able to quickly find Kha’Zix as the backup pick.
They showed a degree of depth in their pick-bans.
Despite being the free win team several times on the international stage,
Receiving a certain amount of criticism and mockery,
Today, they are victorious.
Indeed, when it comes to BO5s,
Whoever has grasped more team comps. has more bargaining chips.
If you guys find this useful,
Why not try out some diving team-fight compositions in the future.
You will definitely learn a lot.
I am your professor, DSM.
See you guys next week. Class is over!
