My name is Gabrielle and for my online video gaming experience, I wanted to talk about
Overwatch and some issues that have arisen due to it being such a hugely popular game.
So Overwatch is a team based online multiplayer game in which you just go into a game, choose
a certain hero, and are paired with people of similar rank, most of the time, usually
just trying to capture points, and defeating the other team.
So a huge problem arising from the fact that Overwatch is an online multiplayer game is
the abusive chat.
This usually happens here in competitive play just because of the very nature of competitiveness
in humans, especially gamers, we want to rank up our skill level and we don't want to lose.
If we start losing games, instead of taking it and moving on, a lot of people get very
frustrated and start abusing other players in the chat.
It can get very nasty very fast because we choose to blame other players instead of ourselves,
and we could be losing for a variety of different reasons, I mean anything from just a good
opposition team to a bad team comp on our end.
And with the bad team comp comes its own abuse, I mean if you choose a certain character,
like Hanzo or Widowmaker, it is a known fact that you will be screamed at because they
are not generally good picks in competitive play, and I have been known to be a little
bit mean when people choose Widowmaker or Hanzo.
And the Hanzo abuse has actually gotten really bad
that it even went viral when a little girl
said it to someone and it was an insult.
So some ways that Overwatch has tried to combat abusive chat is by replacing certain messages
that people put with funny phrases, so like when
somebody says good game, easy to the other
team, they start replacing it with things like "Mommy says people my age shouldn't suck
their thumbs" and other things of that nature, and its just embarrassing things that people
wouldn't want other people to know.
Overwatch [sic ] has also included a system for reporting abusive chat, you can also report
a lot of other things by just clicking on one of their names and you can report abusive
chat and poor teamwork so if theyre not actively trying to help in the game, anything like
that, cheating, griefing.
And it can just get that way and Overwatch is just trying to prevent that so there isn't
so much abuse going around.
And there are a lot of other problems with Overwatch such as players cheating.
So a lot of times when they play a sniper like Widowmaker people will say that they
are using aimbots or something of that matter.
And another thing that people were cheating in is recently, Overwatch created a custom
game mode, where you can make your own kind of game, and a lot of people were taking advantage
and they would idle in the game but still earn xp to level up fast.
And Overwatch tackled this by kicking players out whenever they idled.
Some other problems that Overwatch has faced in its small but lengthy history is that a
lot of people on both sides of this actually is the oversexualization of the characters.
And one the biggest offenders is Widowmaker obviously with her skins that aren't too aren't
appropriate for mass audiences, but I think the biggest issue was with Tracer, she is
[sic]
the mascot of the team and she had a victory pose which Overwatch actually deleted because
of the outcry.
They had to remove this pose right here because people weren't sure if it was too oversexualized
or not and that was just some problems that I've listed with Overwatch and yeah there's
always going to be problems going on with those very popular games, thank you for listening
in.
