a box of chocolates as one of the most mysterious objects in the known universe ...
"You never know what you're gonna get."
But what happened to the cast who made Gump such a smash?
Tom Hanks as Forrest
Let's start with the obvious: Tom Hanks, already an Oscar-winning mega-star when he played
Forrest Gump, has hardly shirked the spotlight.
In addition to putting another dozen or so award-winning performances under his belt,
Hanks has since starred in Saturday Night Live's most baffling Halloween skit ...
"What's my name?"
"David S. Pumpkins!"
"Any questions?"
… and did some very impressive lip syncing for pop star Carly Rae Jepsen …
"I'm runnin' out of time Goin' out of my mind I need to tell you something I'm pregnant
"Okay …"
"Just kidding!"
He's also still half of one of Hollywood's most longstanding marriages — he's been
hitched to fellow thespian Rita Wilson since 1988.
Robin Wright as Jenny
Robin Wright was hardly an unknown when she scored her role in Forrest Gump — at least
not for the millions of fans who loved her on the daytime drama Santa Barbara or her
performance in the cult fairytale favorite The Princess Bride …
"Farm boy!
Polish my horse's saddle.
I want to see my face shining in it by morning."
"As you wish."
Wright spent the next two decades working steadily in smaller-profile roles, until she
landed the breakout part of the brilliant and ruthless Claire Underwood on Netflix's
House of Cards in 2013...
"I'm willing to let your child wither and die inside you if that's what's required.
But neither of us wants that."
Uh, as you wish, First Lady Underwood ...
Following her split with actor Sean Penn in 2010, Wright was involved until 2015 in an
on-again, off-again engagement with X-Men actor Ben Foster, 20 years her junior.
Michael Conner Humphreys as Young Forrest
After what could have been a breakout performance as young Forrest, Michael Conner Humphreys
took a completely different path, joining the Army and serving four years as an infantry
soldier, including an 18-month tour of duty in Iraq.
He tried to keep his brief stint in Hollywood a secret, but it didn't take long for his
fellow servicemembers to figure it out and start calling him "Gump."
Humphreys made one foray back into acting post-Forrest, playing a soldier in the 2011
indie film Pathfinders.
Hanna Hall as Young Jenny
Everyone's familiar with Hanna Hall's great contribution to pop culture:
"Run, Forrest!
Run!"
… but she's also worked regularly in film and television ever since.
As a teen, she scored roles in Sofia Coppola's The Virgin Suicides and the 2007 remake of
slasher classic Halloween.
In more recent years she appeared in guest roles on Criminal Minds and Masters of Sex.
Hall can also be found on Twitter, where she's not a frequent poster but does like to give
fans the occasional glimpse of what she's working on — or, when she was working on
Masters of Sex, what kind of vintage undergarments she's wearing.
Sally Field as Momma Gump
Sally Field was already a multiple Oscar winner and longstanding A-lister when she played
the tenacious matriarch of the Gump family.
After spending several years as a cast regular on ER, she joined the ABC drama Brothers and
Sisters, for which she won an Emmy.
Then she slummed it for a bit as Aunt May in those Amazing Spider-Man movies starring
Andrew Garfield ...
"Last time you did the laundry you turned everything blue and red."
"That was a mistake.
I was washing the..the the American flag"
But she also went highbrow with an Oscar-nominated performance in 2012, when she played Mary
Todd in Steven Spielberg's Lincoln.
So Field has been keeping plenty busy as she enters her seventies … and she still finds
time to tweet under the handle "real momma gump."
Mykelti Williamson as Bubba
After his memorable turn as Forrest Gump's B-F-F Bubba Blue, Mykelti Williamson has been
very busy in Hollywood, although you may not have recognized him without the prosthetic
bumper in his lower lip.
Among his more prominent appearances: Baby-O in the Michael Bay cult favorite Con Air,
a regular role on Justified that spanned three seasons, and another on the NBC drama Boomtown.
And don't think he's given up serious award-season fare, either: in 2016, he was part of the
cast of Oscar contender Fences.
When not in front of a camera, Williamson likes to engage with fans on Twitter.
And every week on Instagram, he celebrates Bubba's signature seafood obsession with "Shrimp
Saturdays," where he posts shrimp-related selfies and solicits pictures of shrimp from
fans around the globe.
Gary Sinise as Lieutenant Dan
Gary Sinise has had no shortage of high-profile projects since Forrest Gump, including repeated
onscreen reunions with Hanks.
The pair appeared together in Apollo 13 in 1996, and again in The Green Mile in 1999.
In recent years, Sinise has found a comfortable home in prime time procedural dramas, playing
Detective Mac Taylor on multiple versions of CSI, before taking over in a lead role
on Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders in 2016.
Sam Anderson as The Principal
The sleazy principal who admitted Forrest to the public school system in exchange for
a roll in the hay with Mrs. Gump will be forever remembered for this:
But actor Sam Anderson was also a series regular on Lost as the kind-hearted dentist Bernard
and a season-spanning guest star stint on Justified as the cold-hearted funeral director
Lee Paxton ... in addition to his character work in dozens of TV shows over the years.
Haley Joel Osment as Forrest, Jr.
It's practically the end of the movie before he appears onscreen, but he's there: before
he saw dead people, he saw dad-people: Haley Joel Osment made his big-screen debut in this
itty-bitty role as Forrest, Jr.
Following his star-making turn in The Sixth Sense, Osment had a successful career as a
child actor, starring in films such as Pay It Forward, Steven Spielberg's A.I, and Secondhand
Lions, with acting legends Robert Duvall and Michael Caine.
As an adult, Osment has chosen to appear in indie flicks and cult fare, such as his turn
as a podcast host in Kevin Smith's body horror bomb Tusk …
