At first sight
It's like the war is
less intense than before
Because in front of me
there is an icon
saying we are now running on four cilinders
We have air suspension..
Four wheel drive..
And you might think it has all become a bit soft
But let me assure you
That is not the case!
The AMG has the kickoff
Then the new M5
and RS6
IT'S..
A very very nice start!
Lets start with the beating hart
A 4 litre V8 BiTurbo
Which we know from the C63
and AMG GT
A "HOT V"
the turbo's are located in the V
so they spool up very quickly
and you get this amazing throttle response
It doesn't feel like a turbo engine..
contrary to the C63
it has twin scroll turbo's
so you have more power at lower revs
and it keeps building power
up to the rev limiter at 7000RPM
It generates 612HP and 850NM
Which is unbelievable!
I'm glad it has four wheel drive
because of that it can do 3.4s to 100km/h
with a top speed of 250km/h
or if you have AMG drivers pack
like this one
300km/h!
And how does 3.4s to 100 km/h in an Eclass feel?
lovely Launch Control for once
it's in Race mode
You don't need to do anything
Just full on the brake
full throttle..
And it launches like a rocket!
just insane!
The way that Launch Control system works..
very agressive!
is what the entire car feels like
when in Race mode
It's on edge..
This engine is much more agressive
than the old 5.5
It's really sharp
And it gives the E63
a much more agile character
in stead of the old rumbling AMG
which was about straight line speed
This S version has active engine mounts
and a very nice rear diff
which make this 1850kg saloon
an amazing cornering car!
And the sound you hear
on the inside it is amplified through the speakers
We also have the optional Performance Exhaust
Which is a bit more silenced than the C63's
But the sound on the inside
is very racy!
very urgent
in stead of the low rumbling sound in the old one
This is much more agressive!
And that's also because of the gearbox
Which has always been the
weak point of the E63
It was a bit slow
didn't handle the power nicely
Now we have a new 9G tronic
9 speed..
Which was launched in the regular E class
But in the normal Eclass
it has a torque converter
and this has a multi-plate clutch
with a wet clutch
Which gives the agression
and strength
The paddle response is a lot better
The previous E63's paddles were slow
Let me put it in Manual mode
shift down a few gears
It's very very responsive!
This may very well be the best improvement
So to take away my earlier doubts..
No!
AMG hasn't gone soft
The four wheel drive system is
pure AMG!
with the drift mode
which is engaged by pulling both paddles
with the traction control off
You can dis-engage the front axle of the 4WD!
So you then get 612HP on the rear axle
Like a true AMG!
But the fact that you can use it
as a four wheel drive
for everyday driving
for a day like this
with rain, sun and hail
makes for a nicer car
Which is the theme of this generation power saloons
The RS6 has done it for years
But that is not as rear wheel drivy as this
Soon there will be the BMW M5
also with AWD
also with a drift button
But both the RS6 and the M5 have the nearly impossible task
of beating this!
