opening statement.
Which had two parts... first it was a joke about internet trolling... and maybe I shouldn't
have been surprised that it triggered trolls who had to pause posting a comment on a local
news stations website about a millennial causing a car accident while texting or an armed robbery.
The 2nd part pertains to this review also... it was a point I was making about how some
new flashlights looked like they've crammed every feature you've ever wanted into a flashlight.
Like the new Nitecore R40... and by the way if you think my jokes have suddenly somehow
gotten worse...
My morrisey joke, my sean connery impression, and these two whatever they are ... would
beg to differ.
The Nitecore R40 is a flashlight that operates much like other nitecore lights I have reviewed
like the EC4GT or MH20GT... in the fact it has a similar user interface and emitter,
but it has a new inductive charging feature...
Remember those old rechargable maglites?
It's like those but more convenient.
And of course 10 times brighter and smaller.
The R40 is rechargeable by inductive charging or USB charging, uses a Hi intensity Cree
XPL HI V3... which means it has some throw and a moderate amount of candela... constructed
out of aluminum that has been black anodized with the type III whatever... has a coated
glass lens and a user interface controlled by Nitecore intuitive two button system.
The box includes the box, the light, a holster,a manual, a desktop charging cradle, a wall
charging cradle, 1 A/C adapter, a car charger, a high capacity 5000 mah propitary 26650 battery,
a spare oring, a spare charging port cover.
Output modes.
First is ultralow, then is low.
Then is medium.
Then is high.
Then is turbo.
Now the user interface... if you own any other two button Nitecore lights with electronic
switches... then you've encountered it before.
Remember it has an electronic switch... when not in use for long periods of time or transporting
in your man bag or man purse or woman bag or doggie bag either give the battery tube
a small turn to break electrical connection... the best way... or press and hold both buttons
for 1 second to lock it out electronically the not best way...
press and hold for more then one second again to operate it normally.
The biggest feature of this light is the charging options.
People who use lights for work, and who use these lights often need easy peazy charging
options... and some flexibility.
The best way to charge it is through one of the two inductive charging cradles like seen
here... it includes 1 A/C adapter so you have to choose which best suits you... but it also
includes a USB port on the back too, so you
can
charge
it from when away from the cradle... although if you use a 5v USB adapter it charges bit
slower.
Inductive charging use magnets, and is often referred to as wireless... so for this to
work just set the charger on either cradle and it charges... no metal rings to line up.
Charging with the cradles takes right at about 7 hours... the fastest way.
You just set it in and it starts blinking to let you know it's sipping on juice.
It stays solid when done charging.
Probably my favorite integrated charging other than olights magnetic tailcap.
Ok now funtimes... the next best thing to paint drying or ambien- or a 6 pack.
Ok I'd go with the 6 pack.
First is turbo.
Nitecore claims they have thermal regulation in about all their lights...
There's probably a few people that might ask... can you put a fan on it.
No.
There is no timed step down, so it holds it brightness strong, but there is a very subtle
steady decline.
Over the first hour there is about a 22% drop.
I'm basing that from the number the lux meter starts out to where it's at, at 1 hour.
It's probably not scientific... but I think you get the idea.
At 2 hours in your at a 41% drop overall, Then it really stats dropping around 2 hours
in 10 minutes.
It never shut down but at 3 hours and 37 minutes I am going to end the test.
ANSI Fl1 standards state that a manufacturer rated runtime has to be over 10% of the initial
brightness.
Nitecore only states 1 hour 30 minutes... so it fits that.
You know unscientifically.
If you don't like the way ANSI rates runtimes, thats not my or Nitecores problem.
Technically.
High.
High maintains it's 533 lumens pretty solidly over the course of it's rated runtime.
It only really starts dropping well after 4 hours... and at 4 hours and 36 minutes you
see it drop.
Big time.
Nitecore by the way rates it at 4 hours and 30 minutes... so this beats that by a bit
and doesn't drop.
At 5 hours in we've dropped 86% from startup... remember ansi would be a 90% drop...
And basically it's slowly dimming emergency light until I stopped the test at 10 hours
and 27 minutes.
Light was still coming out brah.
Fun stuff right.
Medium... and you thought High sucked.
I didn't have the lux meter for this one...
I think it was in use doing something else.I don't really remember but it isn't important.
High told you that it holds it's brightness on any mode other than turbo for extended
periods of time.
So here we are at a little over 200 lumens of brightness...
Nitecore rates this run time as 10 hours 30 minutes... so we dont start seeing a drop
in brightness until after 11 hours 30 minutes.
Then it begins to dim with emergency mode light and when I end the test at 19 hours
and 40 minutes there's still the teeniest bit of light still coming out.
Cool..
And you're like not cool bro.
Beamshots!
Here are the other lights I'll be comparing this to.
You'll see the R40 is a bigger light, because of the charging and magnets... wait you're
like magnets how do they work.
And a channel OG is like I've heard that one before- please stop.
Ok first is the R40.
It's got a decent amount of that candela... so this light won't do too bad outdoors for
longer range spotting... or if you work in a large mall.
Now the EC4GT... not quite as throwy, but similar in overall output... if you already
have this light I'd only upgrade if you like that charging and a larger light, or have
to collect them all!
You can see the hotspot isn't as tight on the EC4GT as the R40 fThe R40 throws a bit
better than the EC4GT...
I think the reflector looks a tad bigger on the R40... and you're like no I have a photographic
memory... get out...
Now they even throwier Convoy C8... it has a more neutral tint... although the R40 isn't
overly blue it is a cool tint... the C8 isn't as bright...
I have reveiwed all lights seen here, so stay tuned to the end for links to those videos.
Now the brighter Olight R50 seeker... it's over twice as bright and more floodier, by
a lot.
A Not as good at longer range stuff like the Nitecore- that one also has integrated charging.
Back to the Nitecore for a few seconds, if you're still around.
Now the Xtar B20 pilot, have any subscribers been with me that long that are still around,
probably not.
I think I had well under a hundred at that point.
That's been years ago man.
Ok wrapping up.
This is an excellent light for work, where you don't want employees fiddling with batteries
or anything... just set it on the charger, go home and get drunk.
The induction charging does make it a slightly larger light- but that's what the holster
is for... here are some dimensions just in case...
I'm only provided the weight with a battery.
The magnets add girth and length... as you pull out the pen and paper how do you add
girth and length again?
The light does use a propritary battery, and requires it for the charging... so you have
to buy extra batteries made for this light if you want spares.
They're not hard to remove, just like any other battery from a flashlight.
It's waterproof to IPx-8 standards so shallow submersions rain and snow are all fine- unless
it's acid and not water.
drop proof for up to 1.5 meter.
If you have owned Nitecore you know they make mostly good lights, and this is no exception...
it's a bit more of a specialty light- but it's also a convenient light to charge too.
If those things make sense to you buy it from BestLight.io based out of Virginia, who provided
this light for review.
Links are in the description with a coupon code that might expire... but not for the
foreseeable future.
Do get mad at me if it does... unless your an internet troll.
Which reminds me...
I should have put a warning at the beginning of the video to skip the first 60 seconds.
Oh well, maybe next time guys!
