of 2017 so far.
It’s been a big year, with lots of great music from the major players in the industry,
meaning this wasn’t an easy ranking to arrive at.
Here goes.
At No. 10, it’s Drake riding the production wave of the year, on the flute-sampling “Portland,”
from More Life.
Next up is Future’s highest-charting single to date, “Mask Off.”
It’s gotta be the most successful song to reference combining molly and prescription
painkillers.
At No. 8 it’s Kendrick Lamar’s most accomplished storytelling track yet, “Duckworth.”
In a single verse the Compton MC tells the tale of how his dad and his boss, TDE’s
Top Dawg, crossed paths before Kendrick was even born.
Next is Migos’ “T-Shirt.”
At the top of the year it didn’t seem like the Atlanta trio would be able to top “Bad
and Boujee,” and then in February they released the drug dealer’s lament, “T-Shirt.”
It didn’t surpass “Bad and Boujee” on the charts but it’s destined to be
a classic.
At No. 6 is Playboi Carti’s “Magnolia,” from his self-titled debut.
It’s been on the Billboard Hot 100 for six weeks now, and it’s obvious why from the
second you hear “Yo, Pierre you wanna come out here?”
Carti and his producer Pierre Bourne made a hit.
Sitting comfortably at no.
5 is Frank Ocean’s “Chanel,” the first in a series of loosies he’s dropped this
year through his Beats 1 show Blonded Radio.
It’s got one of the best opening lines of the year and one of the coolest song concepts
too.
At No. 4 is Drake’s super smooth “Passionfruit.”
Working with producer Nana Rogues, Drake delivered one of his best ballads-to-date with the second
single from More Life.
You’ll hear it all summer.
Kendrick makes his second appearance in the top 10, with “DNA” at No. 3.
From the second the world heard Damn, “DNA” was singled out as one of the album's best
moments, and when the beat switches in the second half of the song, it’s obvious why.
Mike Will had to tailor the beat to Kendrick’s verse, it was so explosive.
At No. 2 we have definitive proof that Calvin Harris got cool.
By uniting Migos and the usually elusive Frank Ocean on “Slide,” he made one of the most
unforgettable songs of the year.
Keeping with the rest of Frank’s 2017 work, “Slide” is about newfound cash and the
feeling it brings.
It’s also the only song on the list with a Picasso reference.
Finally, the best song of the year, according to Complex Music, is Lil Uzi Vert’s “XO
Tour Llif3” .
Uzi Vert talks about being a rock star, and this is where he comes closest to hitting
that mark.
“XO Tour Llif3” takes the feeling of an emo song and melds it with the sound of contemporary
rap, making for a track you can’t help but sing along to.
