Stop gettin' heated. No pun intended.
All right folks, I'm gonna give it to you straight.
It's not a debate anymore.
The science is conclusive.
Global warming is a real problem.
But don't worry, that doesn't mean that we're doomed.
This video was inspired and sponsored by
An Inconvenient Sequel movie, which also supports
this message, so let's get right into it.
Here are the five biggest causes of global warming.
Number five is mining.
To keep up with the world's demand for coal,
industries often choose to acquire it
through something called strip mining,
a process that requires less labor
and brings in more of the valuable resource
while unfortunately doing significant damage
to the planet not only through contamination
of local waters and animal inhabitants,
but through the release of emissions stored
within the earth, which are released
when the top layers of soil and rock are removed.
In fact, 8% of all methane emissions
are the result of coal mining.
By switching to clean renewable energies
and reducing the need for coal as a resource,
we can start to scale back the amount of damage
that mining causes the environment.
Additionally, investing wisely and away from coal
will help force the industry's focus
onto more eco-friendly options.
But that's just solution number one.
Don't worry, there's more.
Number four are fertilizers.
As the population of earth increases, so does the need
for food and thus the need to grow more on farms.
This means that the amount of fertilizer being used
is going up at a steady pace,
and that could spell big trouble for us.
Any nitrogen in that fertilizer
that doesn't find its way into a plant can combine
with microbes in the soil and create nitrogen oxide,
an emission that is 300 times
more harmful than carbon dioxide.
Luckily, multiple studies are being carried out
to figure out the exact amount of fertilizer needed
for each acre of farmland and the hope
is to drastically reduce the amount used.
So the world can be changed through sparing.
Okay, we're finding solutions.
I'm feelin' better.
Number three are vehicles.
Just thinking about the dirty air associated
with big traffic jams can be enough to get you coughing,
so it should come as no surprise to hear
that one of the biggest causes of global warming
comes out of the burning gasoline
in the vehicles that we drive.
When an engine burns gas,
it releases heat-storing CO2 into the air.
Around the world, drive clean style programs
are being carried out to try to get the impact
our vehicles have on the environment
down as much as possible.
To help, why not use public transportation,
or non-powered methods such as a bike
or your own two feet to get around?
It's good exercise and saving the planet all in one trip.
Number two is deforestation.
It should go without saying that cutting down a forest
is bad, but it's not just the lack of shade or oxygen
that they can no longer create
that should worry us about losing trees.
It's the amount their loss contributes to global warming.
See, plants store carbon, which would otherwise be damaging
to the environment and our atmosphere
through mixing with greenhouse gases,
and obviously when those trees are cut down,
they can no longer hold that carbon,
and when you consider that the planet loses
nearly 32 million acres of rainforest every year,
that results in a fast increase in CO2 emissions.
By protecting the plants that can't protect themselves
and preserving our rainforests,
we won't only be saving the lives of millions of animals,
but ourselves, as well.
And number one is electricity production.
Currently nearly 75% of the world's electricity
is created through the burning of fossil fuels,
which releases a number of different emissions
into the atmosphere.
In the United States, over 40% of carbon dioxide emissions
released are caused through the burning
of fossil fuels for this purpose.
Humans need electricity, that's a fact,
but we can change how we obtain it and through the use
of safe renewable methods of energy production,
we can be saving our planet even more than we think.
But until then, every little bit helps,
and turning off lights when not using them,
unplugging all non-essential items
and overall keeping your electricity use low
will keep both your power bill low
and the impact on the environment low.
So, now you know what you can do.
It's true that the stakes have never been higher,
but we are close to a real energy revolution,
and while it may not seem like it,
watching the upcoming film, An Inconvenient Sequel,
is taking action because you're educating yourself.
Just like this video, help me get a message of truth out
and go see An Inconvenient Truth in New York and Los Angeles
starting July 28th and nationwide August 4th.
