Mae Young Classic Begins There have been many different kinds of elbow
drops in WWE - People’s Elbow drops, weak elbow drops, MACHO elbow drops (OH YEAH).
But now, with the debut of former STARDOM champion Kairi Hojo, we can add a new type
to the list: the ‘oh dear God, I think she just killed someone’ elbow drop.
The first set of tapings for the Mae Young Classic tournament officially got underway
last night, with all 32 women competing.
And despite initial reports that Hojo wouldn’t be allowed to do her top rope finish because
that’s Bayley’s move, WWE either changed their mind, or Kairi just went out there and
did it anyway.
Did I mention how scary her elbow drop is?
Hojo will go by the name Kairi Sane in WWE, and she celebrated her debut last night by
posting a picture with fellow Japanese wrestlers Shinsuke Nakamura, Akira Tozawa and FUNAKI.
Tozawa hasn’t gone crazy, there.
The ship’s wheel he’s holding is part of Sane’s Pirate Princess gimmick.
We won’t get to see the matches for another month, though, with the tournament set to
air on the WWE Network on August 28th.
Ronda Rousey At WWE UFC fighter Ronda Rousey was also at the Mae
Young Classic taping...just unfortunately not as an actual competitor.
She was there to watch her fellow Four Horsewomen member Shayna Baszler compete in the WWE tournament
instead.
But that didn’t stop Triple H getting the usual ‘look who we just signed’ pose selfie:
“The #MaeYoungClassic will celebrate and showcase female competitors from around the
world.
Great to have @RondaRousey join us tonight.”
But Ronda isn’t the only non-predetermined combat fighter Triple H is currently courting.
Triple H Invites Conor McGregor & Floyd Mayweather To Raw
In what will probably be the biggest money fight ever, current UFC Lightweight Champion
Conor McGregor will face off against 49-0 record holding Floyd Mayweather in a boxing
match on Saturday 26th August - the week after Summerslam.
Promotion for the fight kicked up a gear this week with a series of major press conferences
between the two.
Press conferences with upwards of 15,000 people in attendance for.
Just for two people trash talking.
Take note, WWE.
Keen to get their own slice of the publicity pie after McGregor accused the press conference
of cutting his mic, Triple H has pointed out WWE’s audio facilities on their flagship
show.
“Monday Night #Raw has plenty of LIVE microphones...
#MayMacWorldTour @thenotoriousmma @FloydMayweather” But as Twitter user @_Noles4Life points out,
those ‘live microphones’ didn’t go so well last time:
“How did that work out with Lavar Ball?”
WWE.com later published an article about Triple H’s offer, referencing Mayweather’s Wrestlemania
24 victory over the Big Show and Enzo Amore’s recent trash talking tweets against McGregor,
deciding “it’s certainly in the realm of possibility.”
Former ROH Champion Debuts In WWE In the latest batch of NXT tapings saw the
long reported debut of a former ROH champion.
Spoilers a’coming in 3...2...1...Kyle O’Reilly, who lost to Aleister Black in his first match.
O’Reilly has been in limbo since his ROH contract expired on December 31st while he
was still the promotion’s world champion.
This resulted in a hasty title change to Adam Cole at New Japan’s WrestleKingdom 11 show
on January 4th.
He was seemingly meant to go straight to WWE, but reported accusations of contract tampering
from ROH delayed the move.
O’Reilly’s live debut comes the same week as his former ReDRagon tag team partner Bobby
Fish’s first match on NXT - also losing to Black - hinting that the other long rumoured
names of Cole and Donovan Dijack are also on their way to WWE.
Pro Wrestling Sheet report a WWE deal for O’Reilly is imminent, but hasn’t been
finalised just yet.
Which two WWE stars reportedly have major heat backstage?
And Alberto Del Rio has been suspended following an incident with Paige.
