Rangers and then discuss it!
Today, we’re exploring the thirty fourth episode of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, titled
“The Green Candle, Part 1”.
We start at the Youth Center, where Zack and Tommy are sparring HARD.
It’s nice to see those two together because they’ve never been together.
Turns out, there’s a random dance coming up, and Tommy is scared to ask Kimberly.
Doesn’t matter, Rita has a plan to conquer Earth… with a green candle that will burn
and steal the Green Ranger’s power.
She even uses a tiny figure of her wand to find Tommy….
But like….
She always knows where he is?
This episode is already dumb.
Zack and Tommy are already training still, and Tommy dares Zack to ask out Angela, who
is walking by, and he’s trying his hardest to get knuckle deep in this girl, who tells
him to get a life.
It’s okay, Bulk and Skull are there to hammer that message home… and Bulk gets stuck in
his jacket because, ya know, fat, and they flip themselves onto the floor.
And Tommy and Zack just tell the girls nearby to come point and laugh.
Jesus.
Rita’s plan is to get putties to kidnap Tommy, and get his coin.
Which they definitely could’ve done last time when they had the entire morpher in their
hands, but okay, we’re at the park, and Tommy and Kimberly are walking, and Tommy
is working up the courage to ask her out to the dance, but putties arrive, and it’s
game over.
They just grab Tommy and teleport away after Goldar shows up.
Man, Rita is still not over that whole “letting Tommy go” there.
This is like the weirdest breakup ever.
Oh, and the putties play keep away for a little bit with Kim’s morpher, for some reason.
Tommy arrives in the Dark Dimension, and his morpher is given to Goldar, and Tommy attacks
by punching the air around Goldar?
Oh, and his communicator doesn’t work.
Dur.
But here’s the deal: if Tommy wants to keep his powers, he has to work for Rita.
If not, the candle will steal Tommy’s powers.
Finster has created a new monster that can create in any shape at will: the Cyclops.
Doesn’t matter, Tommy and Goldar are still expositing about some dumbass candle while
fighting the Dark Dimension.
Slow episode, guys.
At the Command Center, the five rangers are trying to get a lock on Tommy, but they can’t.
The sirens blare because the Dragonzord has arrived in Angel Grove, and it’s attacking.
It’s just straight up demolishing the place, and the Rangers fear the worst: Rita has totally
mindraped Tommy.
And then Zordon kills it by saying “wait, never mind, that’s a fake”.
They morph to take care of it.
Goldar also lets Tommy know that he’s got work to go do, so he puts terrible Video Toaster
effects on him to keep him back, and he arrives in the city for a cool ass putty fight with
the Rangers.
Not gonna lie, I love the desolate set dressing.
And the Rangers watch the fake Dragonzord attack the city for like a full two minutes
before they call out the Dinozords.
I smell insurance fraud somewhere.
The zords arrive, and they form the Megazord at a glacial pace before they fight the faux
Dragonzord.
They suck, and they say they need Tommy, and then in the Dark Dimension, Goldar shows up
and lets Tommy know that his friends suck, and also he sucks, and his dick is definitely
bigger than Tommy’s.
The two fight again, and Tommy is not getting the idea here, but he straight up steals Goldar’s
sword and teleports out with Goldar.
He morphs to the scene right away, and Goldar says “doesn’t matter, the candle is still
burning, nerd.”
Tommy tries to control the fake Dragonzord, to which I say, did no one fill him in??
Oh never mind, the real Dragonzord shows up.
Then the Cyclops can’t hold his shape anymore for… some… reason, and he flashes between
a bunch of different forms before disappearing.
Tommy claims to be a Power Rangers to the end, which is funny because he’s about to
lose his powers.
In the Command Center, the six rangers talk about Tommy is totally okay, and Zordon has
to be like “uh….
I mean, it’s totally possible because you touched that magic wax while you were working
with Rita so like… you fucked yourself over.”
Nope.
No bluffing here.
Tommy will be history once the green candle has burnt completely down.
To be continued.
This episode is honestly pretty great.
I mean, Tommy is going to lose his powers because he touches some random ass magic wax
like 20 episodes ago, and Goldar is just being a total dick about it the entire time.
It’s all pretty great.
The weakest part of this episode is the crappy monster, but Cyclops could definitely be worse.
So, what will happen next time?
Will Tommy get to keep his powers?
Will Rita explain what the hell she was doing with a tub of wax for 20 episodes?
Will Kimberly ever figure out why the putties were playing hot potato with her morpher?
Find out next time, but until then, may the power protect you!
