even before I was on your show.
I was lucky enough to be on the show.
You´ve interviewed everyone from --
The president came to you. -Yeah.
Barack Obama came to my house. -Yes!
-Not the new one. -Oh, that´s right.
President Obama. -Yeah.
-Bruce Springsteen?
-I went to Bruce Springsteen´s house.
-How cool is that? -It was -- It was wild, man.
It was -- it was -- Like, I was --
I was nervous, ´cause I didn´t know --
Like, I wanted to connect with the real Bruce.
Do you know what I mean?
Like, when I did -- When I did the talk with you,
we did it in some office -- It looked like a pub.
Is that your office? -Yes.
-Yeah. [ Laughter ]
-I´m like, "Is this..." -No, no, that´s not mine!
That´s not -- No, no! Not mine!
No, mine is, uh, looks like a -- a yoga --
yoga class would be in my office.
-I was like, "Are we in a bar in Boston?"
There´s a guy with an apron there, cleaning glasses.
-That´s not true. -"How are ya? How are ya?"
-"How are ya?" Yeah, exactly.
-"Nice to see you, Jimmy." -[ Laughing ]
"Nice to see you Jimmy," in my office, yeah.
-"How are ya?"
But, no, you get into it, and I love listening --
listening to the podcast, ´cause I go,
"Oh, that´s such a great question."
And I feel like you´re just -- you´re right in it.
And you´re right in there with the guests.
But then reading it is a different type of enjoyment.
-Well, this is wild, because the book,
you know, thanks to my producer and business partner
Brendan McDonald, who has this memory --
He, like, remem-- He remembers all these conversations.
Like, I have them, and then they´re gone, really.
You know what I mean? Like, I´ll kind of know
I talked to you today, tomorrow, but...
-Thank you. -No, no, it´s not an insult.
I just have -- -Yeah, it is.
-A lot of things are going.
-But what we did was -- -I´m in the book, actually.
-Yeah. Oh, are you? -Yeah.
-That was inter-- [ Laughter ]
-Talking about -- Of course!
"Waiting for the Punch."
Do you mean waiting for the punch line?
-Wait, wait. Well, dude, see that´s right -- the poetry,
What do I got to explain it to you for?
-Sorry, no, you don´t have to explain it.
-So, like, what we did was, we made themes.
So there´s chapters -- growing up, sexuality, identity,
relationships, parenting, addiction, mental health,
failure, success, mortality, life lessons.
And we took bits and pieces from the conversations
that are relative to the theme,
and they´re just together in each chapter.
So you read it, and it --
There´s a lot of different people talking.
Like, you´ve got Springsteen,
Obama, Kristen Wiig, Leslie Jones, Louis, you.
But when you read it -- When people talk
and they´re not thinking about writing,
it goes into your head differently.
You know, you read it, and it goes right in.
You know, there´s no sort of -- kind of fancy --
-I love it. -Yeah.
And I was amazed, ´cause I read the book after,
you know, I wrote it, and...
[ Laughter ]
But it´s not -- I wrote the -- -It always helps.
-I wrote the intros and stuff,
but it´s mostly bits and pieces
from my conversations with people --
You can preorder it.
-Thank you, Marc. Yeah, thank you, Marc.
We can preorder it, yeah.
-Are you gonna do it? Oh, you can do it.
-No, I can do it. Yeah, this is my job.
Yeah, absolutely. [ Laughter ]
-Don´t get the audiobook, ´cause that´s already out.
That´s your actual show -- -The actual podcast, right.
-This is the -- Yeah, this is the typed book of the audiobook.
-Are we done? Is this it?
-No, there´s more. -Okay, okay.
[ Laughter ] -Because here´s your problem --
-But that felt like a closer to me.
-No! -Okay, I´m sorry.
-I´ll tell you what the closer is.
-´Cause that´s when it happens, like,
"And now you´re just gonna leave now."
[ Laughter ]
That´s when the thing comes up.
-No, no, the thing comes up, and then it goes down.
It´ll come up again. -Okay.
-It comes up and down. -Okay, okay.
-I´m throwing curveballs at you. -Up and down.
-I want to say, what a -- What a year you´ve been having.
-Ugh. -Can we talk about --
No, I mean in a good way. -Mm.
-"GLOW"!
You are fantastic in this. Can I just tell you this?
-Thank you, thank you. [ Cheers and applause ]
-Look at me. You´re fantastic in this.
-Thank you. -You really are.
I mean, this is, like -- I felt like it was written for you.
-It -- It was a --
You know, there´s a guy.
I didn´t -- I didn´t know about "GLOW."
I didn´t know -- Like, the script came --
-"Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling."
-Yeah, the "Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling."
which was a real -- It´s based on a real thing.
-I remembered this. -Yeah, you could see --
There´s a doc about it, too, but they sent me these sides,
these scripts, you know, the part.
And the guy was this beat-up, sort of coked-up,
kind of half a failure, smoking cigarettes,
been through a couple marriages, and I´m like, "I know that guy."
[ Laughter ]
I´ve -- I´ve been that guy.
[ Laughter ] So --
But what was interesting about acting
´cause I don´t really think of myself as an actor.
I always wanted to do it.
I did my own show on IFC for a few years,
but I wanted to do somebody who wasn´t me
and just be able to go to work and act.
And the thing that was different about me and Sam Sylvia,
the guy I played, was that he had no self-awareness
and he wasn´t neurotic.
All right, so, my acting job on that was like,
"I´ll just shut those two things off."
[ Laughter ] -"And then I´m the guy."
-Yeah! -[ Laughing ]
That´s a really interesting way of acting.
-I can´t do it in my real life
because then I would be frightened.
You know, I´d just be like, "Wow. I feel peaceful
and kind of confident, and who needs that?"
-You know, so -- What´s the matter?
-No, I´m just saying, that´s --
Those are two chapters, by the way.
You forgot to mention that´s -- other ones.
No, no, I´m not holding it up again, no.
That´s not how you do it.
[ Laughter and applause ]
I will do this.
-But, like, what I´m --
It was a great experience doing "GLOW."
The women were amazing.
I´m the one guy with like 14 women.
Alison Brie. -Alison Brie, oh, my God.
-She´s -- Let me tell you something, dude.
That -- That part --
Like, I was amazed every day working with her,
´cause that character
is earnest, desperate, and ambitious.
And how do you make that charming, you know?
But Alison Brie did it, and it was, like, genius.
-The scene where she wrestles herself, like --
-Oh, that was so good.
And I did a lot -- I did a lot of scenes --
Every day, I´d go to work, and I´d see her,
and I´d be like, "Oh, this is gonna be great."
You know, ´cause she´s so good --
They´re all good. Betty´s good, they´re all good.
-I know, but you can´t watch you because you are you,
but you´re good.
-I watched myself. I did all right.
[ Laughter ]
-Here´s a clip...
