The Week in Review - 18 August 2017

More than 3000 people have been displaced and several hundred killed
after flooding and landslides hit Sierra Leone. The UN Children's found is
responding to the needs of children and families affected by what it called
'unprecedented' damage. The agency is providing safe drinking water and
sanitation, and delivering supplies such as medicines and tents.
Amid growing tensions on the Korean Peninsula the UN Secretary-General reporters it is time
to dial down the rhetoric and dial up diplomacy. He also offered the support of
his good offices to assist the parties. And I will remain in close contact with
all concerned parties and stand ready to assist in any way.
This year's World Humanitarian Day highlights the need to protect civilians in conflict, including
the brave men and women who risk their lives to help those in need. I've been
really inspired by the courage, the persistence, the determination of the
workers who want to really make sure that people who are affected by these
crises, through no fault of their own, are given the life-saving and the protection
that they need.
