internet frenemy you never realized you always wanted.
But how much do you really know about the surprisingly private star?
Here's a look at some things you may not know about Daniel Tosh.
He sold knives in college
While attending the University of Central Florida in pursuit of a marketing degree,
Tosh took an unusual side job: selling knives door-to-door.
Well, sort of.
Tosh told The Cornell Daily Sun,
"I kind of feel like I scammed them, in the sense that I never really gave a presentation.
I just lived in a dorm in college, and did one presentation to like a dorm-full of people.
It was like, 'OK, everybody sign off for one.
I’m gonna make a little money and get out of here.'"
After graduating, Tosh took those marketing skills and used them to sell something a little
more interesting: himself as a stand-up comedian.
Who says a college education doesn't pay off?
He's hosted other shows
Long before he became a star, Tosh began his TV career on a local late night show in Florida
called Tens where he and co-host Jennifer Cole went around Miami interviewing models.
The show is so obscure that no footage seems to have made it online yet, but according
to Donald Hansen, who worked on the show, Cole absolutely hated Tosh and ended the show
after a year when she got a new gig as the host of Strip Poker.
Web Redemption was a tough sell
Tosh needed all of his marketing skills to sell viral stars on the idea of appearing
in his Web Redemption skits on Tosh.0.
He told The Santa Barbara Independent,
"Pretty often they were a little reluctant.
They were more like, 'who are you and why do you want to do this exactly?'"
Once they realized they were in on the joke this time instead of just being the butt of
the joke, though, Web Redemption became an easy sell, and one of his most popular recurring
bits.
He made a $25,000 bet for a sick friend
In 2015, when friend and fellow comedian Andy Ritchie was diagnosed with a brain tumor,
Tosh used his show to promote a GoFundMe page aimed at helping Ritchie cover his medical
bills.
The page eventually raised more than $100,000, with Tosh earning another $25,000 by auctioning
off props from Tosh.0.
He didn't give the money to Ritchie, though.
Instead, he gambled all $25,000 in a double-or-nothing bet that the New England Patriots would lead
his beloved Miami Dolphins by more than 3 and a half points at halftime of their Thursday
Night game.
It might seem reckless, but as anyone who watches the NFL knows, it was actually about
as sure a thing as possible.
"it's a can't lose. If my Dolphins are winning, I'm happy.
If they're losing, Andy gets the much needed help
If the Dolphins are only losing by 3 points, THERE IS NO GOD!
Tosh won the bet, earning an extra $25,000 for his friend, who tragically lost his battle
with cancer a month later.
He refused to do a Reddit AMA
You'd think Daniel Tosh and Reddit would go together like peanut butter and chocolate,
but apparently, he wants nothing to do with a website that's basically his show in text
form.
In 2011, Reddit invited Tosh to participate in an Ask Me Anything thread.
Tosh responded by posting a photo of himself turning down the honor.
True to form, Redditors jumped all over it, photoshopping the message in all sorts of
unique ways, many of which are too graphic to show here.
You know what they say: live by the troll, die by the troll.
He has serious beef with Rob Dyrdek
In 2011, Rob Drydek of Dyrdek of Rob & Big fame decided to get in on the clip show action,
debuting a new MTV series called Ridiculousness which was essentially Tosh.0 without Tosh.
After Tosh tweeted a sarcastic congratulatory message to Drydek, the two began a twitter
beef that eventually escalated to the point where Tosh did a skit on his show painting
Drydek as a pedophile.
That was the last straw for Dyrdek, who said he'd be fine settling the score "the old-fashioned
way."
Tosh welcomed the fight with one caveat, tweeting "fair enough but if you have to beat me up,
can we film it and put it on my show so people will actually watch it?"
Winner: Tosh.
He isn't a fan of Nick Saban
If there's one person Tosh despises more than Drydek, it's football coach Nick Saban, who
quit the Miami Dolphins to take a college job at Alabama.
Tosh uses every opportunity possible to trash Saban, but when he made a snide joke about
a series of devastating tornadoes that ravaged the state in 2011, some Alabama residents
were outraged.
"The problem is Bama just got it's ass kicked by a tornado. Apparently God hates Nick Saban even more than I do."
Tosh did also ask his viewers to donate to the Red Cross's tornado relief fund, but considering
how seriously Crimson Tide fans take their college football, and the fact that nearly
350 people died, he might want to stay out of Alabama for… the rest of his life.
"If you want to feel smart, and sexy, and special, you surround yourself with toothless townees in Tuscaloosa."
