I gave the rest of Youtube a head start though.
You're welcome knife bros.
Like the rest of the internet and tops of tables are already aware the Y-Star JIN01
is a big overbuilt folder that is pretty cheap at $16.
Overbuilt is a word that means No regard given to weight.
And is a feature of knives of all price points.
Can you hack and chop and baton with it?
I wouldn't.
Then why does it weight almost 6 ounces.
Alright good talk.
So let's look at the dimensions... like the overall length and weight.
The blade size and cutting edge.
Yep, it's a big un... mmm hmmm.
The handle size and grip area.
Made for hands of all sizes!
The spine thickness and handle thickness.
And the tallness closed.
The drop point full flat grind blade on the JIN-01 is made from a satin finished D2 steel...
which explains why this knife is so popular.
The satin finish I mean.
Under $20...
D2... not that smelly 8Cr... whatever.
They say flat grinds are better for slicing and that there was a second shooter and I
will say I like my flat grinds for slicing.
The smooth sexy blade is deployed by thumb studs- and subscriber Chris Brooks is happy
that it isnt a flipper.
But probably sad that it aint a Benchmade.
It isnt a massively quick deployer and youll have to practice with some semihard hits to
get it to deploy every time.
I get misfires every now and then, but everyone knows that by now.
I even got it greasy by putting on some 3-in-1, but the deployment stayed the same Washers
are of the phosphor bronze flavor to make washer snobs happy.
Blade centering is pretty pretty pretty good.
The lock up is handled by a really cool lock known as a liner lock which seems reasonably
strong.
I dunno I think Ive already made all the liner lock jokes I can.
Not too hard to disengage not overly easy just a regular one.
The handle is a liner with G10 scales slapped on top of it.
Theres jimping on the blade spine.
I would prefer more of a ramp like on an endure so theres some surface and jimping to push
against, but I guess that I didnt wish hard enough.
Theres some jimping on the handle thats widely spaced and not really sharp.
And the same goes for the bottom near the back of the handle.
Ive been told thats for when you hold it like youre going to stab a car hood those guys
must have been watching cold steels channel.
Which brings me to the holding of the knife the G10 is sort of smooth and the finger groove
is shallow, and theres not much of a thumb ramp and although its not slick there aint
many surfaces to keep your hand from moving.. now if youre doing regular old boring stuff
with the knife it aint no thing, but not a lot of hard things to aid control of the blade
like a slipper stud or deep finger groove, or a more pronounced handle curve.
I dont know what you do with your knives in the privacy of your work desk, but I guess
thats none of my business.
The pocket clip.
There aint one.
Cool.
Theirs is a lanyard hole for a lanyard skull sculpture though.
And blade rentention when closed is excellent, while it doesnt feel like it has a strong
detent, it wont come open in your pocket, and I can only to get it to open when closed
by really hard throws downward.
Ok so lets do a quick comparison.
I am also reviewing the YStart JIN02 and that one has a nice and really stiff axis lock
so look forward to that review or dont its a bit smaller and I think I like the looks
and feel to this one better, although that might give you a more grippable handle.
That one also has a ball bearing system, which really doesnt seem to help the deployment
over JIN 01.
How about the Benchmade Crooked River man how about this one This one sure deploys faster,
and I love the overall look better thats a $180 knife unless you got a sugar daddy.
Lets look at another heavy knife the Ganzo F756 which pretends likes its a Benchmade
940 clone.
Youre no 940 Mr 4 and a half ounces.
I like this knife though I mean not like a 940 but I like it ok theyre nice knives, which
is why I give Ganzos to coworkers who dont have preferences for weight Ok I think weve
seen enough here.
Lets see if we can keep this one a bit shorter than my 10 minute reviews lately.
Gotta cut up some cardboard though.
While I give some parting thoughts.
I like this knife about as well as any Ganzo or heavy Chinese knife It has a solid lock,
ok deployment, and nice looks.
No real QC issues, just something too heavy than I normally lock.
It not having pocket clip isnt that big of a deal either, because it wouldnt be in my
pocket much.
But it should do fine in the tool box in my wifes trunk.
