Colin Jost Won an Emmy but Went Home Empty-Handed

-You won nine Emmys. Congratulations.
[ Cheers and applause ]
-Well, "Saturday Night Live."
-"SNL" -- "SNL" -- I didn´t know.
It was the first time "SNL" had won Best Show in 23 years,
which is probably that time that I loved watching the show.
-Is that insane? -Isn´t that insane?
-That doesn´t make sense. -And Lorne was very generous.
And we all came -- The cast all went up on stage,
which was so exciting.
Like, I´ve never been up onstage at the Emmys.
And everyone was like, "Congrats, you finally got --"
´Cause I think we´ve been nominated like 10 times.
And it was like, "You finally got that Emmy,"
and I was like, "Yeah, but, you know, I don´t get one."
Like, I don´t get a trophy. -You don´t get a trophy?
-I don´t get a trophy.
Like, just the producers of the show get one.
So I was on stage, and my family was like,
"Yeah, we´re gonna come by, see that trophy."
[ Laughter ]
-There´s nothing. -I´m like, "Yeah, no."
But how about that stage?
[ Laughter ]
That´s pretty cool, too.
-Do you walk down the street, do you go, like --
Do people recognize you, and you go,
"Man, I´m doing what I wanted to do?
This is great." -Yes, it feels good.
It feels, you know -- Of course people --
-Did you want to be on camera, or did you want to be a writer?
-No, I always wanted to be -- Like, only "Update."
"Update" was the only thing I ever thought I wanted to do.
-And so who´s the season premier?
-We got Ryan Gosling. [ Cheers and applause ]
Pretty awesome, for the new "Blade Runner" movie.
And we got Jay Z, musical guest.
[ Cheers and applause ]
-Not too -- Not too shabby. -Not too bad.
-When Tina and I did "Weekend Update," we --
We were trying to think of a good, like, kind of
"Good night, and have a pleasant tomorrow,"
which we actually took from Chevy Chase.
-Yeah. -But we --
We tried a bunch of different things.
What do you guys say, you and Michael, when you...?
-We kind of just --
Well, remember, one time, we got to do it with you guys,
and we did that, the signoff that Chevy did originally,
which was really cool.
It was on his birthday, which is really cool.
I remember that.
-"Good night, and have a pleasant tomorrow."
Tina and I tried a bunch of different things.
-What were other ones you tried? Do you remember?
-Like, "I´m Jimmy Fallon, I´m Tina Fey,
and when we get together, it´s news."
[ Laughter ]
It got that reaction. -Yeah, yeah, yeah.
It didn´t stick. It didn´t stick.
-Oh, it was really awful.
Dude, we went through so many awkward phases.
Dude, you´re so lucky that you didn´t
go through the awkward phases.
-Are you are kidding me?
I feel like we had two years of it.
We were like -- We didn´t know what we were doing for a year.
-No, but your hair always looks good.
Have ever seen my haircuts?
[ Laughter ] I had the worst haircuts.
-You had a great --
It was true variety show, in terms of hair.
-I tried so many different looks.
I tried an asymmetrical haircut once.
I thought that was gonna be cool.
-That would be perfect now.
If you were in Brooklyn right now...
-It´s just... And then I did a --
I remember I did a -- I did slick-back look.
I did -- Shaved three lines in my hair.
-No, you didn´t. -Yeah.
My last show -- -Classic newscaster look.
-What was I doing? I was so awkward and timid.
-Brian Williams, I think, has that now.
-Yeah, he does, that, yeah.
I remember Tina looking at me, and she was like,
"This is awful, dude. Like, what are you doing?"
I´m like, "I don´t know. I´m trying something different."
What is -- Have you tried --
-You should´ve had the exact same as Tina one day,
just come in...
-She tried a bunch of different looks, too.
Yeah, next time she´s on, I want to show pictures.
-That´s good. That´s a good one.
-Well, I want to say congratulations.
You´re doing a great job. -Oh, my God.
-Congrats on everything.
