South Korea's defense ministry said Wednesday that the U.S. military will install the four
additional THAAD launcher early Thursday morning.
The ministry said Seoul and Washington decided to speed up the deployment in view of Pyongyang
provocations in recent weeks including two intercontinental ballistic missile launches
and its sixth nuclear test.
With the four additional launchers installed, U.S. Forces Korea will have a fully operational
THAAD battery at its base in Seongju.
A THAAD battery consists of six launchers, a fire control and communications unit and
an X-band radar.
Meanwhile, hundreds of local residents and activists are gathered near the U.S. base
protesting the deployment.
Local residents oppose the deployment, claiming the battery could turn the village into a
military target and that electromagnetic waves from the THAAD radar could cause health and
environmental problems.
China has also been strongly against the deployment, arguing that the battery's presence undermines
its security interests in the region.
Seoul and Washington claim THAAD is defensive in nature and is only aimed at the North.
