The Rock Vs. John Cena III?
The Rock vs John Cena main evented the highest grossing pay-per-view in professional wrestling
history at Wrestlemania 28.
The tagline for the show was ‘Once in a Lifetime’, so, naturally, the two had a
rematch at next year’s Wrestlemania 29.
But is the ‘Twice in a Lifetime’ clash soon set to become a third/thrice/thrwird?
Over the last several years, Cena has become an in-demand comedy cameo actor thanks to
his scene-stealing performances in Amy Schumer’s Trainwreck and Tina Fey’s Sisters.
His turns have been so well received, he’s now getting lead roles - voicing the main
character in animated children’s film Ferdinand later this year, and making the transition
to blockbuster action cinema by getting cast as a central role in Transformers spin-off
Bumblebee.
And it’s that impressive body of work that’s most likely put him in line for the new DC
superhero movie Shazam.
The comic book it’s based on is about teenager Billy Batson who becomes “Captain Marvel,
the world’s mightiest mortal” whenever he speaks the word Shazam!
While the studio is still looking for an actor to play the teenage version of Billy, The
Hashtag Show reports there are two front runners for the Captain Marvel role: Galavant actor
Joshua Sasse or 16 time WWE Champion John Cena!
Where this gets even more interesting is who’s already been cast as Captain Marvel’s arch-nemesis
Black Adam...Rock ‘The Dwayne’ Johnson.
Sadly, while Shazam is slated for release on the 5th April 2019 - shortly after Wrestlemania
35 - Black Adam apparently won’t feature.
His solo movie doesn’t have a release date yet.
With their initial feud being based on The Rock leaving wrestling for Hollywood, and
Roman Reigns now criticising Cena for being a part-timer, both men facing off in a blockbuster
superhero movie is the rivalry’s logical end game.
Perhaps with Cena completely making the transition to acting, Baron Corbin might stand a chance
in the main event...
New Baron Corbin Backstage Heat Details ...or not, according to a new report from
PWInsider.
Both Sports Illustrated and The Dirty Sheets initially claimed that Corbin’s recent de-push
- which involved unsuccessfully cashing in his Money in the Bank briefcase and losing
to Cena at Summerslam - was because Big Match John had buried Baron backstage.
It was also noted that Corbin accidentally insulting a member of the armed forces on
Twitter didn’t help.
But last week Dave Meltzer wrote the real reason was actually because of a non-wrestling
related incident, and PWInsider now have a detailed account of what happened behind-the-scenes.
The site report that in early August, Dr. Joseph Maroon - who heads up the WWE Wellness
Policy - led a talent meeting about the importance of concussion-related injuries and why they
need to be reported to management as soon as possible.
Apparently he brought up a recent study on the NFL and then allegedly “downplayed”
the link between football and developing CTE - the degenerative disease found in those
with repetitive brain trauma.
This was when Corbin, a former NFL player himself, challenged Dr. Maroon about this,
and noted he’s actually part of a concussion-related lawsuit against the NFL - accusing Maroon
of being against the CTE link.
The two then went back and forth for several minutes in a scene described to PWInsider
as "awkward", "time standing still" and "an awkward moment that led to awkward laughter".
Corbin was said not to be yelling, but he was “expressing his opinions in ‘the wrong
time and the wrong place’”, and would’ve been better served having the discussion privately
rather than in front of everyone at the talent meeting.
Although other sources were said to have been impressed that Corbin spoke up for himself.
