When NBA 2K17 was released last summer, most people didn’t know who LaVar Ball was.
With his oldest son Lonzo still a couple months away from bursting onto the college basketball
scene with the UCLA Bruins, LaVar was still just your average AAU parent looking to push
his kids a little bit closer to NBA stardom.
He was, by all accounts, just as loud and over-the-top as he is today, but he didn’t
have the name recognition he has now.
So the idea of putting LaVar into NBA 2K17 didn’t even register in the minds of the
2K creators.
But a lot has changed over the course of the last year.
Since NBA 2K17 was released, Lonzo Ball blossomed into a top NBA prospect during his time at
UCLA and was eventually selected No. 2 overall by the Lakers in the 2017 NBA Draft.
LaVar’s youngest son LaMelo has also blossomed into one of the most-hyped high school basketball
players in the entire country.
And all the while, LaVar has spent his time making one outrageous statement after another
to keep his name in the news.
From telling TMZ that Lonzo will be better than Steph Curry one day to telling anyone
who would listen that he thinks he could beat Michael Jordan in a game of 1-on-1, LaVar
has worked his way into the national spotlight and refused to leave, even as his critics
have tried to get him to fall back in order to avoid putting any additional pressure on
his sons.
LaVar has become such a prominent and polarizing figure in NBA circles that the 2K creators
decided it just wouldn’t be right to put out their latest game NBA 2K18 without LaVar.
So they found a couple of different ways to incorporate him into the mix in the game’s
MyCareer mode.
NBA 2K18’s MyCareer mode will feature a social media feed in it that will show a handful
of different sports personalities sharing their thoughts on players.
And LaVar will be one of those personalities.
As you attempt to build a name for yourself in MyCareer, LaVar will be right there criticizing
you every step of the way.
But the 2K creators didn’t stop there.
In addition to incorporating LaVar into the social media feed, they are also going to
have LaVar sending NBA prospects all kinds of crazy text messages in the game.
And just like in real life, it appears as though those text messages will feature LaVar
bragging about how great his son Lonzo is.
We’re sure there are going to be some NBA 2K18 players who will get tired of seeing
messages from LaVar pop up on their screens.
But for now, LaVar is being praised for finessing his way into the game in the first place.
LaVar has pulled a lot of impressive finesse moves in recent months, but this might just
be his best one yet.
“Lavar Ball is on 2k.
I dont wanna hear nothing else negative about this man.
#1Dad”
Say what you want to say about LaVar, but it is pretty incredible to see him score a
role in a game like NBA 2K18.
A year ago, he was just another dad sitting on the sideline watching his son play basketball.
And now, he’s a part of one of the most storied sports game franchises of all time.
That’s quite the come up.
That’s the news for now, but for all the latest news on LaVar Ball, subscribe to Complex
