A MAJOR
EVENT NEXT YEAR WE HOPE YOU'LL
PARTICIPATE IN. THE GOAL IS TO
RAISE
MONEY FOR LIFE SAVING RESEARCH
ON
THE GULF COAST...WE CALL IT
"HEART OF THE
GULF". TONIGHT, I GIVE YOU AN
UP CLOSE LOOK
AT HOW YOUR DONATIONS TO THE
AMERICAN HEART ASSOCIATION ARE
BEING PUT TO WORK.
WHAT HAPPENS IN THIS RESEARCH
LAB ON THE CAMPUS OF THE
UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH
ALABAMA COULD CHANGE THE WAY
DOCTORS TREAT PATIENTS WITH
CARDIOVASCULAR DISEASE.
Goal
"our goal is to help patients. I
mean that's why we do
this everyday."
THANKS TO GRANTS FUNDED BY THE
AMERICAN HEART
ASSOCIATION...THESE
RESEARCHERS ARE WORKING ON
TAKING
THE LIFE SAVING MEASURE OF
OPENING
CLOGGED ARTERIES TO A WHOLE
OTHER LEVEL.
Stand up..this small piece of
metal mesh is a heart
stent. It's on a balloon. When
a doctor blows up the
balloon..the mesh
expands..opening a
clogged artery. The balloon is
pulled out...leaving the
mesh behind. This works great
for a heart. Other
parts..not so much".
longer stent
"the thing with the stent is
..It leaves a metallic
platform behind so..it's always
there and
ideally..you don't want to leave
anything behind in the
body"
STENTS IN THE LEGS TEND TO
FRACTURE BECAUSE YOUR ARTERIES
THERE MOVE.
shortens
"the real interesting part here
is..we're actually trying
to mimmick what happens in your
leg arteries. As you
walk your arteries twist and
shorten and so that is what
this machine is doing right
here..so we're actually
twisting it and shortening it.
And so by having this
model we can actually go through
different designs as
see which design gives the best
therapeutic option for this
model which will actually go
into patients".
SOUTH ALABAMA RESEARCHERS ARE
TESTING NEW TECHNIQUES ON PIG
ARTERTIES THEY GET FROM A LOCAL
BUTCHER. ARTERIES ARE KEPT
ALIVE IN THIS
INCUBATOR.
THE LEFT ARTERY YOU SEE HERE
HAS A
TRADITIONAL STENT. THE RIGHT
ONE USES
THEIR METHODS.
THEY SPRAY MEDICINE ON A
BALLOON.... DELIVER IT TO THE
CLOGGED ARTERY AND
REMOVE THE BALLOON. ANOTHER
TECHNIQUE
THEY'RE WORKING ON USES A
CATHETER AND
A SYRINGE TO DELIVER MEDICINE IN
LIQUID
FORM.
Close
"how close are you guys to
developing these
alternatives do you think? I
mean we're..we're very
close. I'm thinking the next
four to eight years we
should see the approaches that
we're developing in this lab
translate to patients in
clinical trials".
AS DR. YAZDANI TOLD ME..WE'RE
ALL IN THIS
TOGETHER. I'LL CONTINUE TO
BRING
YOU REPORTS, EVENTS, AND LIFE
SAVING
INFORMATION EVERY MONTH LEADING
UP TO
THE ART FOR HEART GALA NEXT
SPRING.
