Myanmar’s Rakhine state a few weeks ago. The UN and its partners are working to
provide humanitarian assistance. Secretary-General Guterres has urged the
Myanmar authorities to address the root causes of this crisis.
The Muslims of Rakhine state must be granted nationality or, at least for now,
a legal status that allows them to lead a normal life, including freedom of
movement and access to labour markets, education and health services.
The UN General Assembly opened its 72nd session on Tuesday.
The President of this session, Miroslav Lajčák of Slovakia, pledged to
promote peace and security, sustainable development and human rights.
The high-level General Assembly debate will commence next week,
with thousands of diplomats from 193 Member States.
A new UN report revealed the plight of migrant and refugee children,
who crossed the Central Mediterranean route to reach Europe.
Over 75 per cent of them face abuse, exploitation and trafficking.
The UN called for efforts to protect migrant and refugee children,
especially those travelling alone, and less educated.
