The UN Children’s Fund reports that three million children need to be supported
with emergency education as the new school year starts.
Here in Borno state, over half the schools have been destroyed in the conflict,
thousands of teachers have been killed,
so we’ve got to help the children get back to learning, get back to school,
and that’s as important as the life-saving work we’re doing on health and malnutrition.
The number of Rohingya refugees arriving in Bangladesh
after fleeing violence in Myanmar has reach half a million.
Speaking to the Security Council, UN Secretary-General António Guterres
called for swift actions to tackle the growing crisis.
The situation has spiralled into the world’s fastest developing refugee emergency
and a humanitarian and human rights nightmare.
I continue to call on the Myanmar authorities to take three immediate steps.
First, to end the military operations.
Second, to allow unfettered access for humanitarian support.
And third, to ensure the safe, voluntary, dignified
and sustainable return of the refugees to their areas of origin.
With the laying down of weapons completed,
the UN has begun the next phase of its work
to support the peace process in Colombia.
The new UN mission is tasked with verifying the commitments
on the reintegration of former rebels, as well as the guarantees of protection
and security for communities in the areas most affected by the conflict.
