in as a left-winger or a striker.
One of Liverpool’s potent attacking trident, Salah, like his opposite
number Sadio Mane, plays on the opposite side to his stronger foot.
Along with Roberto Firmino’s ability to drop and link play,
these three create an attacking unit for Liverpool that
can attack from anywhere and create multiple problems for markers.
Between the three of them, Salah, Mane, and Firmino have scored seven of Liverpool’s
eight goals this season:
Sadio Mane – three goals of eight team goals – 38%
Roberto Firmino – two goals of eight – 25% Mo Salah – two goals of eight – 25%
Salah is a wide man who prefers passing or cutting inside for a strike to crossing.
He is a potent dribber who drives at opponents.
He’s also improved in the last three seasons, giving
up possession less.
This fits Liverpool’s rapid, counter-pressing style.
When Liverpool win the ball back, they can attack with speed, a quick series of short
passes and direct running, and Salah’s way of
attacking fits this perfectly, passing and moving into space, or cutting inside to create
an overlap out wide.
Salah’s output for Liverpool this season compares well in terms of attacking output
with his last two league seasons at Roma, although
his key passes per 90 are down; this is likely because he has less of a supporting role at
Liverpool; all of the Reds’ front three are
expected to weigh in with goals and attack directly, so key passes tend to come from
deeper- lying players such as Emre Can, or from the
full-backs.
Salah’s driving style means he gets into the box regularly, assisted by Firmino’s
ablity to drop off and that of right-backs like Trent Alexander-Arnold
or Nathanile Clyne to overlap and drag the opposition full-back wide.
This season, Salah has had 5.3 shots per 90, of which 0.4 shots per 90 are from outside
the penalty box.
Salah has also only created two chances this season, one of which was an assist;
Firmino has six, which is the most of any Liverpool player and shows how Salah’s role
(and Mane’s) is much more direct and less about
feeding the Brazilian striker than getting into the
box and shooting.
