-I was. I was. I did Elsie Fest,
which is this great festival
that Darren Criss from "Glee" created.
And we sang in Central Park, and it was so amazing.
You know, I come from, like, Broadway,
and I hadn´t sang, like, in New York in the city
in such a long time, so it was awesome.
-What did you sing? -I opened with
"Don´t Rain on my Parade," which I heard you love.
[ Cheers and applause ]
-I mean, honestly,
I remember seeing you perform that on "Glee."
-On "Glee," yeah!
-And I was, like, crying my brains out.
I go, "Wow. That was really..."
You have such an amazing voice.
-Thank you. Thanks. -So beautiful.
That´s pressure, though. -It´s -- Listen.
I get so nervous when I perform.
First of all, amazing job on the "Hamilton" mix tape.
So great. -We´re not here about me.
-Jonathan Groff was very proud.
You know, he´s my best friend. So you were incredible.
But I do. I get so nervous when I perform.
It takes me like weeks leading up to it,
and, you know, it´s a lot of --
And singing "Don´t Rain on my Parade" --
I love Barbra Streisand.
So it´s a lot of pressure for me.
And I was, like, nervous,
but it went well, so I was really happy.
-But you said that you would -- You took it out of your routine.
-Oh, my gosh, yeah. We used to do it in --
So, we did all these amazing concerts for "Glee."
We were at Staples Center, and we did --
Literally all over the world.
And one night, I was on stage,
and just all it takes is that one time.
-Ugh! -And I was singing the song
which I´ve sung a hundred times.
And God knows what part of the song it was,
and I was like, "And now I don´t remember any of the words."
In the middle of the song.
And it was fine. Like, I got through it.
But after the show, I fell to my knees,
started bawling, crying, and I told Ryan,
"I can´t do it in the concert anymore."
So we cut it from the concert!
-Really? -Because I was so scared.
-Can´t you just get a teleprompter or cue cards or something?
-I mean, I had so many of the words written on my arms.
-It´s a long song!
-It´s like "rain," "butter," "apples," "pears," "parade."
-Oh, my God. Really? -Yeah.
-So you sang -- Next time you´re here, I want to hear you do it.
I know you have albums out. -I do.
My album "Places" came out at the beginning of the year.
-Congratulations on that. -Thank you so much.
Thank you. That was really awesome.
I went on a little tour for that, which was a lot of fun.
-Has Barbra ever seen your performance?
Have you ever met Barbra?
-I performed at the MusiCares event,
which is the night before the Grammys.
They honor a special artist, and the year
that they were honoring Barbra Streisand,
I went and I sang "My Man," which was terrifying.
And she was right in front of me. I had never met her before.
-Were you not making eye contact, or what were you doing?
-I was literally like, "How is this happening
where I´m singing for Barbra Streisand right now?"
-What was her reaction? -Luckily, she had her dog
on her lap, so I was just focusing more on the dog
and just paying attention to that.
-Did the dog enjoy the performance?
-Like, I mean, I hope so.
I equally care about what her dog thinks
as much as I care about what she thinks.
-That´s how much you love Barbra Streisand.
-That night, I was like,
"This is the night. I´m going to meet her."
And it was, like, we were pulled away from each other,
and I was like, "Barbra-a-a-a-a!"
We didn´t meet that night, but then the next night
after she performed at the Grammys,
I felt a little tap on my shoulder at the valet,
and it was like, "Lea, you were great.
Did I sound good tonight?"
And I was like, "And now I´m dead."
And I died there that night,
and everything has been a dream ever since!
-[ Laughs ] That´s it. And she´s the coolest, right?
-I mean, I´m obsessed with her.
She also has a mall in her house.
-I heard about this. -Yeah, we should go.
I would totally go. She has a mall in her house.
-Barbra, we would really love to --
I don´t know what camera to look at.
I´m just looking at them all. -It just doesn´t matter.
Just get it out in the air. -If we could go.
-I would love to go. Please.
-You probably are really scared of us now, but...
-Yeah, you don´t even have to be there.
-Yeah, which is even weirder. -Just leave your door unlocked,
and we´ll come in your house. -Yeah, totally. It´s great.
