Mount Agung in Bali erupts, thousands evacuated

Volcanic eruptions over the weekend on Indonesia's popular holiday island of Bali have prompted
officials to cancel flights and evacuate almost 25-thousand residents.
This morning, authorities raised the threat of the volcano erupting to the highest possible
level... as other countries, including South Korea, advised their nationals to refrain
from visiting the island.

The alert level for Bali's Mount Agung has been raised from level 3 to level 4, the highest
possible level.
Authorities have also extended the exclusion zone on the tourist island, and urge people
within 10-kilometers of the volcano to evacuate.
The head of the Indonesian geological agency said the alert level was raised because the
volcano has shifted from steam-based eruptions to magma-based eruptions,... but he also said
he is not expecting any more major eruptions.
Flights have been cancelled or delayed after the 3-thousand-meter-high mountain belched
columns of ash into the sky, leaving at least 2-thousand tourists stranded.
Bali, famous for its surf, beaches and temples, attracted nearly 5 million visitors last year
but business has slumped in areas around the volcano since September when Mount Agung's
volcanic tremors began to increase.
Mount Agung last erupted in 1963, killing over 1-thousand people and destroying several
villages.
It is one of around 130 active volcanoes in Indonesia, which sits on the Pacific Ring
of Fire, a belt of tectonic activity running around the rim of the Pacific Ocean.
