Garden. It is a tropical species from the forests of South Asia
Many of the Himalayan and South Asian orchids were originally brought back to
the UK by the orchid hunters of the late 1800s.
Orchids fetched high prices and
forests were stripped of these valuable jewels.
While this is still an issue for some orchid species today, advancements in
growing orchids from seed in the early 19th century has meant that plants need
not be collected from the wild. The Dendrobium is an example of this and
means that orchidss can be enjoyed by all
without imperiling their survival in the wild.
Orchidaceae is one of the largest plant families, with upwards of twenty seven
thousand species found on all continents except Antarctica. They range from the
cold Tundra of northern Sweden in Alaska to the steamy rainforests of the Amazon
basin. The greatest diversity of orchids are found in tropical and subtropical
environments. Orchids are generally absent from desert environments though
they may be found in oases and more sheltered canyons and scrub. They occur
in a wide variety of habitats either growing in the soil or using other
plants as an anchor point.
This particular orchid was collected
during a school conservation trip to Sikkim in the foothills of the
Himalaya and cultivated from seed.
These orchids are sold and the money used to
fund trips to support orchid conservation.
The orchid collection at Cambridge University Botanic Garden provides a
great educational resource full of stories, ecological, biological and
cultural with great potential for future research.
