-Snap, my father's here.
[ Laughter ]
-This is crazy. -Is this crazy?
-This is crazy, this is so fun.
Thank you for this. Did you ever think that I would,
first of all, ever host "The Tonight Show?"
-I'll tell you, man, I can remember after doing that movie
"Taxi," singing on the corner, and I said, "This kid is going
to go a long way."
[ Laughter ]
-We did. I love you man.
I used to bother you all the time.
I wanted to know the stories. I know you served on
the Newark Police Force for so many years.
You have so many good stories.
Quickly, let's talk about your daughter.
When did you realize -- When did you know she was going
to be a performer?
-She would mimic everything, you know?
And she picked up the guitar and she got into the guitar,
and she played that guitar, and then she started singing.
And then I said, "Well, she's hitting the notes
and she's singing. She's going to go far
with this," you know.
[ Audience aws ] But my son had a set of drums.
And I worked nights, and I gave him the drums
and he lit them drums up one morning
and I had worked all night. I said, "Oh,
these drums have got to go!"
[ Laughter ]
-Wanted to get him into something else, yeah.
-He says, "Look, Dad!" [ Imitates drums ]
I said... -Have you tried the triangle?
That's a good idea. Yeah, play the triangle.
-Yeah. -Oh, my God.
I forget about that. -How many years
did you serve as a police officer?
Is it 18? -About 18.
And it's a funny thing being a policeman
that you're always being called, most of the time in people's
hour of need or at the worst time, you know.
-Sure. -You can get a little --
not complacent with it, but you want to see
the happier side to people sometimes and happy occasions.
And so, there's memories of close encounters
and bad encounters, and you see situations
where little kids become parents and some situations where --
I had one case where a kid was 9 years old
taking care of three other siblings.
Cooking and handling it down.
Another kid was 8 years old. His father had terminal cancer.
And this kid was shining shoes
and making money to buy food and take care of his uncle
and go to school.
After seeing that, you say, "Wow.
Little kids can do a lot."
-I want to hear the story.
I want to hear you tell the story about --
I mean, you told me so many stories,
but there's that one about the bar.
-'Cause you're playing it real cool right now.
-Yeah, yeah. -I'll show you how we did this.
-No, because there was a guy, remember the bar?
-Can you come around? -The shoot-out?
-Sure.
-Tell the audience what happened, Daddy.
[ Cheers and applause ]
Tell them. Set it up.
-In this scenario, what happens is,
I happened to stop by a club to see a friend that was there.
And there was a party going on.
And after I came into the place, a fellow came in on
the other side near the door.
They had a jukebox then. He came in with a shotgun
and he announced that it was a stickup.
And he had another guy with him, and the guy had a bag
and a gun in his hand.
And so he said, "Go down this line, everybody sitting
at this bar, hand over your wallets and your jewelry."
So, this guy had the gun in this hand
and the bag draped under it going down and getting the money
and everything from everybody coming down the line.
So I say, "What am I going to do?"
'Cause this guy is coming down the line, and the other guy
down there has got the shotgun.
-Wait until you hear this story. -So, as he's coming down
getting people's stuff, I said, "Oh, man, I can't hand him
my wallet because I got a badge and everything in there."
So I said, "I'm not going to give up the gun."
So, the guy comes down the line. So. he gets over here.
I take the wallet and I toss the wallet up on the bar.
So as he looked at that, I spun this guy around
and pulled the gun out, shot the guy down here
at the jukebox and then pushed him off and banged him.
[ Laughter ]
[ Cheers and applause ]
-I can't even believe that's just one story out of many,
many stories that you have and what you went through.
And thank you so much for your service.
And I -- I can't thank you. [ Cheers and applause ]
-You don't even know, you don't hear these stories, you know?
And they're great stories.
