Welcome back to the show.
Though he's locked down the death cultist vote,
there are people of faith willing to stand up
to Donald Trump.
A defense of white supremacy seems
to have presented no moral quandary for one
group of Trump's advisors--
because so far every member of his
evangelical advisory council is staying
put, with one exception.
Pastor A.R. Barnard, founder, Senior Pastor,
and CEO of the Christian Cultural Center.
The only member of the president's Evangelical
Advisory Board to resign.
When he vacillated over the last week--
especially over Charlottesville-- I
had to fully disengage myself.
Wow, who is this a rare beacon of godly principle
in these ungodly times?
To find out, I had to step out of my comfort zone
and into church.

[MUSIC - "HALLELUJAH"]
Samantha?
Samantha.
Lord?
No, this is pastor Bernard we're
suppose to meet in my office.
Get off my stage.
Of course, I'm so sorry.
SAMANTHA BEE (VOICEOVER): How exciting
to be invited into the pastor's sacred space
and have a spiritually refreshing
conversation about our nation's 45th President.
I physically want to vomit when I hear
Donald Trump talk about Jesus.
I feel like there's so much vomit inside me
that it might blow my eyeballs out of my head.
Well I hope you have a lot of reserve vomit
because there's a lot to observe, I think,
as long as he's in office, OK.
He doesn't come across as someone who
legitimately knows the Bible.
But if that were true, then why is the Bible so
high on Trump's reading list--
of two books?
My second favorite book of all time--
what's my first favorite book?
The Bible.
The Bible.
How many seconds were you into the council
before you realized, whoops I'm not
going to effect change here.
Meeting two.
Meeting two?
Yeah, meeting two.
Oh.
How long did it take to [LAUGHING] say, OK I got you.
What did you think that you would
be able to achieve by being part of his advisory council?
That I would be a voice--
a minority voice at the table--
to help influence policy, ideas, initiatives.
Fast forward to May of 2017--
sitting in the blue room next to him at the table having dinner.
So, I engaged them and I seized a good 15, 20 minutes
to talk about the inner city.
How many of those minutes do you think there's a possibility
he thought you were Ben Carson?
Well, I don't look like Ben, so I think--
and I hope-- that he realized Ben wasn't sitting next to him.
Let me just picture it.
He's sawing through his well done steak--
dousing it in ketchup.
And bragging about how great the food is, yeah.
Great.
It was like, a person who was so fascinated
with being where they are that that
was the most important thing.
SAMANTHA BEE (VOICEOVER): And lucky for Trump,
he surrounded himself with an evangelical counsel
who were equally fascinated to find
themselves in the White House.
And they're still there after the sexual harassment
allegations, and mocking the disabled,
and sympathizing with white supremacists,
and endorsing an accused child molester--
I mean he's running out of commandments.
Like if that's not the point where Jesus taps you
on the shoulder and goes, dude, this is not working out--
then I don't know what is.
This is not all bad because America has been exposed.
We're being forced to have a conversation that we've needed
to have since the Civil War.
I interpreted him as a Saul--
someone who was put into power not at the desire of God,
but as a concession to the people--
and who ended up exposing the spiritual and moral condition
of the nation.
So this is ripping off a very healthy
and lovely Band-Aid to reveal the rot
at the core of humanity.
Great.
SAMANTHA BEE (VOICEOVER): As with any open oozing sore
you've got to get the puss out, but the question
remains, who or what will be the ointment
this nation needs to heal?
I think that a lot of people look to the evangelical
community-- especially right now-- and say,
why are you not standing up?
Where is your voice?
I guess I would ask that community--
you know for all that we have lost all ready and for all
that we are about to lose, and the worst
that we might get into--
is it worth it?
You have to ask those questions--
what do you stand for, what are you willing to fight for?
And if you are in a situation where you can compromise
those values, you better think carefully--
what you are giving in exchange for your life, your reputation?
But you know, it seems like a lot of Evangelical leaders
are very comfortable using Donald Trump--
who's really a heathen--
I mean they're using him as a cudgel in the culture war
and they seem very comfortable with that.
You know, there's a wonderful passage of scripture
in the book of Samuel that says, "Man judges by the outward
appearance," so people are judging
the counsel by their actions-- or their lack of action.
What would you urge your colleagues in the Evangelical
community to do?
Hold them accountable-- put your relationship,
your access, at risk.
Be willing to walk away--
be willing to demonstrate that you have a set of convictions
beyond just your redemptive motivations for his soul.
You have a responsibility to the nation.
Is Donald Trump going to heaven?
We're in a holy place you can't lie.
You cannot lie.
I cannot say who will or who will not go to heaven.
I'll say it.
There's no way.

We'll be right back.
