I mean, I've never had a perfect broadcast. I never have and I probably never will
and I think that's a good thing because I'll always find a way that I can be
better. My role as the host is really to be the traffic cop, you know, timing is
very important on the show. We have a lot of elements we need to get to, we have a
lot of breaks we have to hit at certain points that we get out to the game or
we're getting out to our analysts for a pregame hit at a certain time; so all of
that is it's very fine-tuned in a rundown.
It's very up-tempo but I also have to lead our analysts in the right direction.
I try to bring the personality out on the show, get the personality out of
these guys maybe get them to go at each other a little bit. If I know one of them
has a differing opinion but he's not saying it on camera I'm gonna get him to
say it, which, I think, is the greatest thing we can bring the audience is what
are we thinking and talking about when you guys don't see us. You know there's a
lot that gets said on that set when we're not on television and when you get
on TV you can tend to be a little bit more buttoned up and you're careful about
what you say. If I can bring that to the audience that makes for a great
broadcast. While I was at Rutgers, I ran cross-country in the fall, indoor track,
and then outdoor track in the spring. Based on the experience I had running, I
know how to calm myself down on TV when I feel that way, like I know what's
going to calm me down the way I did when I was competing in college. I see all the
parallels of what I did to remain positive and good at what I was doing in
college, all of that has come with me throughout my whole life, especially now
with this job there's so many different things. Right now I'm balancing NHL
all-star game is next week, we go right to the Super Bowl for a week, and then we
go right to the Olympics for two and a half weeks, so all of that's on my plate
right now and the way I do it is just compartmentalizing and being very
organized like I was at Rutgers.
