Modern films incorporating time and space are usually extremely
ambitious and creatively difficult, but with Walt Disney
Pictures making another go at a classical novel to start off the
year, will it deliver? Time to hop in and find out in the
sci-fi family adventure, "A Wrinkle In Time".
"A Wrinkle In Time", based on the 1962 novel of the same name
by Madeleine L'Engle and directed by Ava DuVernay,
centers around sensitive, but smart Meg Murry, played by
teenage actress Storm Reid, whom after meeting with three
celestial beings send her, her brother, and her friend on a
planet-hopping journey to rescue his trapped scientist father.
While the original source material is based on a white
family overcoming the cynicism of different cultures, director
Ava DuVernay makes the effort to confidently universalize a
modern style and cast, including the creation of a biracial
female protagonist undefined by the decade that the novel was
released. Unfortunately, even though DuVernay is one of only
three women to generate a Disney blockbuster with over a $100
million dollar budget, the tolerance of all the sloppy
dialogue, underwhelming script, and overloaded narrative is
dependent on how old the audience member is. The visual
effects on each world, its antagonist called 'The It', the
colorful costuming, and music by 'Game of Thrones' veteran Rawin
Djawadi, uplift the journey some, but its overall tone of
cinematography draws comparisons to 2015's 'Tomorrowland', the
last Disney-centric film that underwhelmed expectations.
Actors Chris Pine as the big idea scientist and father, Dr.
Alex Murry and Deric McCabe as Meg's brilliant kid brother,
Charles Wallace Murray, were the biggest standouts in an ensemble
cast that was ultimately unmemorable, including the three
Mrs. of astral travelers; Mrs. Which, Mrs. Whatsit, and Mrs.
Who, played by Oprah Winfrey, Reese Witherspoon, and Mindy
Kaling, respectively. Storm Reid and Levi Miller as the film's
main leads give missed opportunities with their
performances in believing that their internal insecurities are
anything dynamic or worth saving - their relationship is
especially bland and uninspiring. Lastly, the biggest
frustrations lie in the concepts of sentimentality and unanswered
resolutions throughout its narrative, combined with rushed
pacing, heavy-handed world-building via the method of
transportation with a tesseract, and an effective big scope
picture overshadowed by specific moment-to-moment details, giving
nothing less than a vibrant, but shallow kids film. Therefore, "A
Wrinkle In Time" shines bright once this visually diverse and
ambitious world is shown to audiences, but its broad,
unorthodox narrative from beginning to end disconnects the
imagination and wonder for everyone else - except for the
kids. I give "A Wrinkle In Time" 3 out of 10 stars.
