who usually uses power tools so I'm going to review it from the point of view of someone
who's trying to decide 'should I go for power tools or should I stick with my shears?'It's
Alexandra here from the Middlesized Garden YouTube channel with tips, ideas and inspiration
so you can enjoy your garden more. I normally trim hedges and topiary manually with shears
or I get someone else to do the thick conifer hedge, so I'm new to using cordless power
tools. But the HT05-Plus is really very easy. The battery is integral so you simply plug
the whole trimmer in. It takes about three hours to recharge after which it will give
you around 45 minutes to an hour of work. I really felt this was very safe to use, because
you have to simultaneously press down a button the side and press the starter switch. There's
a button on both sides, so you could be right-handed, left-handed or use it upside down. If it were
to get knocked out of your hand, it would automatically switch off. However even when
a blade isn't running, it could damage bare skin, so wear stout shoes, gloves and jeans.
This is not a shorts and sandals activity. There's a button at the head which you use
to adjust the head into six different positions, and you can also extend the trimmer easily.
The blade isn't all that wide - our hedge is about 80cm deep, so I needed to trim the
front edge first, then go back over it with the head in a different position to get the
back cut. But as it's so light and has the different positions, it's very easy to manoevre.
I'm 5'5" so I'm not tall but I was able to lift it high enough to cut a hedge that was
taller than me. GTech say that this won't cut very woody hedges - it's a trimmer. But
it makes light work of trimming ivy, climbers and some people use trimmers to prune roses.
As the battery is integral, the GTech HT05-Plus will only last as long as the battery, and
batteries don't necessarily last much longer than about three years. On the other hand,
it's definitely much quicker and easier than using hand shears, so I think we would use
it often enough in that time to justify the price. So do subscribe to the Middlesized
Garden YouTube channel for ideas, inspiration and tips for your garden. Thank you!
