filled with smoke and bubble gum on the floor,
to fight dangerous criminals in Virtua Cop.
Virtua Cop was developed by Sega AM2,
a Sega division that made several arcade hits in the 80s and 90s.
Virtua Cop was released in 1994 but before that
Sega AM2 developed games like OutRun,
Super Hang-On
or Virtua Fighter.
These and many more were so successful
they went from arcades to our living rooms.
In Virtua Cop we play as a police officer
in a mission to stop a powerful criminal syndicate.
In fact, the story is only a pretext for non-stop action.
We have to kill Joe Fang's minions, one-by-one,
through three stages.
At the end of each level we fight a boss.
The game makes things a bit easy for us
as it points out where the minions are
as soon as they appear on screen.
We have to react quickly!
If the target that shows where our foes are turns red
they'll shoot us.
Some of them throw grenades and other stuff
that we must also shoot.
Just don't go into Rambo mode
because there are many civilians around.
The game will punish us if we kill one.
Sometimes is hard to keep cool in the midst of a shooting
and we do kill a couple of citizens once in a while...
And how could we forget the classic "Reload"?
Backgrounds aren't just eye candy since we can shoot some elements
and find power-ups like shotguns and other guns
in them.
We start with a pistol
that shots only six bullets.
It quickly becomes scarce.
However, we can't switch between guns and we go back to our regular revolver
as soon as the special ammo is over.
Since this is a rail shooter we must follow a pre-determined path
but the gameplay is very cool and most importantly
it's a very fun game.
Virtua Cop is known for its awesome 3D polygonal graphics
that inspired other games
like Time Crisis or House of the Dead.
Even the hailed GoldenEye on the N64
started as a rail shooter
before becoming one of most acclaimed FPS of the decade.
Back in the day, Virtua Cop graphics were great
and even today, more than 20 years later,
I think they aged quite well.
Graphics still have a major role in what makes this game fun.
Visuals go hand in hand with a soundtrack
that has the 90s vibe all over it.
Virtua Cop is considered an innovative arcade game
mainly because its 3D polygonal graphics
but also because some gameplay aspects
like the fact that foes react differently
according to the body part we shoot.
As far as I recall, Virtua Cop is easier than its sequel
but one of these days I'll dust Virtua Cop 2 off
and check it out.
And we must not forget Virtua Cop 3 !
This game was also published on the SEGA Saturn and PC.
Although we couldn't use the Saturn's light gun on PC
I find the mouse really good for rail shooters.
There is also a Virtua Cop port on the PlayStation 2.
Virtua Cop is not a hard game and it's quite short.
Since we always follow the same path
we get to memorize where the criminals come from
and where to find extra guns.
Even so, Virtua Cop is always very fun play.
Gameplay is very addictive and it's hard to stop playing.
You know the drill: let me just kill one more baddie...
That's all for today!
Bye.
