How to Change DNS on Roku and Watch Netflix US

If you own a Roku outside of america or UK, chances are most of the channels are geo restricted
,which means your viewing library is rather limited.
With Smartdnsproxy you can circumvent these restricted and watch 10x more content.
To see U.S apps available for your Roku, you need to register with a U.S. Roku account.
You won't need a U.S. credit card if you do it the right way (we'll come to it in
a bit) but in order to run those apps, you may still need a DNS service.
Now, unlike apple tv or PS4, roku doesn't allow custom DNS. So, you'll have to setup
Smart DNS Proxy on roku, by changing the DNS settings in your router. Yeah, that's the
only way to go about it.
So, let's see how you set up smart dns proxy on roku. Shall we?

To get started, head over to Smart DNS Proxy.com and create a free trial account.
Now, since roku doesn't come with custom dns settings, you need to setup Smart DNS
Proxy on your router with static IP address. We already have a video on this, so, click
on YouTube card for the detail guide, But here is an quick overview.
Using the link below, find the 2 DNS server, closest to your location. Next, login to your
router and enter those DNS server in your router's web interface where you can see
option to enter DNS1 and DNS2.
Now, go back to your Smart DNS Proxy Account section and reactivate your IP address, make
sure you have 3 green check marks in your account home. Now, every device connected
to your router, will use Smart DNS Proxy servers, including your roku.
Next, you will need to factory reset your Roku
By going to system > Advanced system settings > and Factory reset.
Enter the 4 digits you see on the screen to reset your device.
After a minute or two, your roku will restart and now you need to set it up again, just
like you did before.
But, this time, (and this is important) we'll do it differently. That's you need to create
new account on roku.com from US.
So, select a language, and connect to your WiFi network, let it detect the best screen
resolution for it.
Once that's done, it'll ask you to activate Roku by going to the web browser. Just write
down the 4 digit alphanumeric code in a piece of paper or something, we'll need this later.
So, to do this, you need to use your computer and go this link and enter the code.
But before this,
You have to connected to the US VPN. VPN. If you are a Smart DNS Proxy paid customer,
you get a free VPN along with the DNS services. Else, you can use any other VPN of your choice
and make sure you are connected to US IP address.
Now, go to roku.com/link on your browser and enter the alphanumeric code you saw on your
TV.
Next click on - I need to Create a new account. In the next screen enter your general details,
like name, email, password etc. just like you did, when you first setup the device.
In the next section, it'll ask you, whether you want PIN code before making a purchase,
I suggest, you set up any 4 digit PIN that you can remember.
This will bring you to billing section. This is where, thing get tricky.
In the past, you could bypass credit card section by using the custom link (we'll
leave that in the description), but anyways, we tried that link, and yes, it did worka
for us. You can find - skip credit info in bottom, however, if you go down that route,
than you want be able to set your address to US meaning you can't circumvent roku
geo restriction.
We will do a separate video on this, so, look for the link in the YouTube cards or description.
But, in a nutshell, if you just want to use roku without credit card, signup with the
special link, but if you want to see geo- restricted content on roku and enter your
credit card or paypal details.
Since, this video is about circumventing geo restriction, we'll enter the billing details.
So, just enter any address form US, by using the data you get from fake address websites.
Make sure to use US address and PIN code and click continue.
Verify you Paypal or credit card details, by authorizing it. Don't worry, you won't
be charge anything, and you can always remove it later.
Remember we are doing all this while we are connected to US based VPN. That how Roku know
we are from outside US.
Finally, once done, roku will ask you do add some channel to the list. This is exactly
what we wanted.
While the VPN is running, sign in to your amazon prime account, do the same for hulu
and other channel you want to add. It's important, that you have these streaming account
registered in US, otherwise, it won't work.
Once you have added all the channel you want, click on continue,
Now, head over to your television, where we have setup Roku device.
You'll notice, Roku will update your channels.
From now on, when you are connected to the your regular internet (i.e. when you are not
in US), you'll get your local Netflix and you'll not be able to get Roku channels
(like HULU) that are not available outside the US.
But, (and this one is good butt), when you connect your roku to a router that's running
Smart DNS Proxy, DNS server, you can see all the geo restricted content like - Amazon Prime
or other US-exclusive channels.
How cool is that!
Troubleshooting-
In case the steps doesn't work for you, here are few things you can try-
First try to restart device and router, this will clear the DNS cache.
Second, the latest version of roku is bypassing DNS settings made on your router by using
hard-coded Google dns server, meaning you need to block both 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 on
your router. A video on how to do that is in the YouTube cards and description below.
