In today's video I'm going to be addressing a comment left by one of my good friends on
my Facebook page--shoutout to Damien--on tips for getting back into the habit of drawing
after a long time.
I should preface this by saying this is not the same thing as art block--which I addressed
in a previous video I will link up here.
I already answered his question on Facebook (and if you're not following me there, go
and do that; the links were at the beginning of this video and will be there at the end...
and in the description box); but I will expound on a few points here.
As I told Damien: If you haven't been drawing recently or for a long time, there's no better
way to kick start it than by diving straight into the deep end.
If you've been a diligent artist up to the point you stopped, muscle memory will kick
in as well as instincts--and while you probably will not make the perfect picture on the first
go--you'll probably surprise yourself at how consistent you can still be.
If you were working on a series get back to it; if you had an idea prior to the dry spell
but hadn't started it, it's time to make that your first priority.
Getting back into it takes too long; sometimes you've just gotta dive in head-first.
Do a big art piece.
You might fail and it won't look right, but now you've got somewhere to start.
A dry spell isn't a mental barrier like art block; it's a phsyical obstacle that is actually
very easy to over come if you have the patience.
And like most physical obstacles: the best way to beat them is to apply the pressure
until your limits expand--a bit like fitness--which I will do a video on in the future, by the
way.
Being rusty comes and goes--even if you stay at the drawing board, ball-and-chain.
What matters most is how you quickly you can recover and get back into the regular speed
of things, if not better.
As I mentioned in a previous video (linked over here), if you don't get it right the
first time you can definitely come back and revisit the topic when you're back at peak
form.
That wraps it up.
If you liked
the video, ETC.
Make sure you tune in next Friday for a new episode of For Future Reference and this Monday
for either a new tutorial
or speed art.
