Let's browse some maps, take a ride and I'll share my experience
I'm certain we all have nice locations around
We just don't know them
Start by checking your local tourist paths
You might find something nice there
dodies.lv is a nice resource
with map view, descriptions and photos
Also check daba.gov.lv
there you'll find locations
with a nation-wide significance
Be carefull!
NATURE2000 areas has strict rules
You're not allowed to camp or light a fire
outside of designated areas
Also I use Google Satellite map
there you can identify forests, fields, roads and lakes
even roads that are not on the map
balticmaps.eu is another option
this map is more detailed
instead of Satellite map, they have Aero photo map
they often have local names mentioned that are not in Google map
Both have Mobile Apps
Aero map version of Balticmaps is a paid option
basic map is free
Google satellite map is free
It will help you orient yourself while on location
Best locations can't be found on Internet
You have to physically go and explore them
Average road density in Latvia is 1,14km on a square kilometer
meaning if you take an area of 25km around your house
then you'll have more than 2000km of road in that circle
It's the same distance as Riga-Berlin and back
or more than entire length of Latvian border
I'm certain most people never
explore those 2000km
otherwise they would find a lot of nice locations
It began with a curiosity
to explore where that road leads
or what's behind a corner where I've never been before
Kids are naturally curious
they use it to explore the world
we fail to explore because
we grow up and forget to be curious
let's return to childhood
My childhood was in Soviet Union and in 90's
beyond some military areas
everything else had a public acess
it's not the case any more
now there are private properties everywhere
where you're not supposed to be
Best way to avoid it
is to go to public lands
you can identify them by yellow signs,
or by many clear cuts visible on the map
or certain forest roads
with notable shapes in intersections
Those roads are usually curvy
with a dead end
There is no heavy traffic
often with no one around
Just like you can't find all locations on Internet
you also can't find them by just driving
you have to get out and go hiking
We have plenty of forests in Latvia
50% of area is covered in woods
but most of them are not beautiful
they are overgrown
with bushes and weeds
Last time I called them "weeds"
I got told off by our Biologist friend
She is single, by the way. Just saying, guys.
I like spruce trees
prefferably old ones
they have nice textures
and branches are low to the ground
not high up like for pine trees
These forest often have moss cover on the ground
which makes forest appear clean
and looks good on pictures
if you happen to have such forest near your home
you're likely to find good photo locations in it
keep in mind any interesting objects that you might find
they might inspire for a photo concept
or be a good place to take your friends to
for example when I found this rock
I instantly got an idea
to make a campfire on top of it and put a tent near by
might be a good photo
When you check maps
pay attention to lakes and river streams
that way I found a forest lake
and met a bever there
near another lake
I found a picnic spot
with a table and fireplace
it might not be anything special
if only this place wouldn't be in the middle of nowhere
Looks like someone has built a nice place for themselves
that only few know about
there is no way you could land here by accident
I have only recently started to
explore my #25local area
and I have already found a lot of places
If only you'd start to explore
some of those 2000km that are in your #25local area
you'll find plenty of nice locations
They come in handy for photoshoots
for picnics or any other adventures in nature
knowing nice locations always helps
I don't have to go to Bernati or Dunika marsh trail
to get out in a good looking spot
Leave a comment down below
and share your best #25local findings
give thumbs-up if you liked this
don't forget to Subscribe
because next time we're going to France
and will tell you how to get benefits
even with a small Instagram account
I just saw people with buckets in the forest
Do you know what are they doing there in April
