it's usually like a circle inside of another circle...
with parts floating around.
And that idea usually comes from their high school textbook.
So all of us have a view of a cell based on...
what we've seen in our biology textbooks.
And that's a great starting point but the fact is...
there's probably no cell in the world that's ever looked like that.
When we can actually see, in detail, whole cells...
and how all the components work together...
it often changes our perception and it changes our mental models.
We really need to understand...
how the component parts of cells work together...
in an integrated fashion to understand how cells work.
We need to understand who in the cells and charge...
how the pieces work together...
and what those outcomes are...
if we have any hope of really understanding cell biology...
and then influencing it.
The Allen Integrated Cell allows us, for the first time...
to look at many of the components of the cell at the same time.
The Allen Integrated Cell unites data and information...
we've obtained from looking at tens of thousands of cells...
into meaningful ways that understand how all that information fits together.
When you go to the Allen Integrated Cell page...
you see many structures together in three dimensions.
We used artificial intelligence and computer vision tools...
to study these images and trained a computer to recognize structures...
that even experts can't see.
This research gave us two powerful models...
to explore the organization of the cell and its components.
I think what's most amazing really is just...
this idea that you can see these specific protein structures...
without labeling anything...
it's just amazing.
For the longest time in biology...
our ability to see what's going on in a cell has been really limited.
What we've never really had is this kind of integrated view...
where you can see lots of different structures in the cell...
not just where one particular protein or structure is...
but where they all are and how they're relating to each other.
I would say that this is a tool to democratize cell biology.
It allows people to take the biology...
and integrate it together, for basically free.
To me it's the closest thing that I've ever seen in science to magic.
Now you can see the inner workings of the cell...
in action...
in a movie...
in three dimensions...
for the first time
