So I thought I'd take a second to share some research that I did with you on how to stay safe
and crush those ticks while still enjoying the outdoors. So I'm out here at the Del Carte
Conservation Area in Franklin, Massachusetts and without further ado let's get going.
Number one on the list is used permethrin.
Permethrin is a synthetic derivative of a compound found in the chrysanthemum flower.
It works like a nerve agent on bugs, so it's gonna kill ticks dead, and it works as a repellent
So it does double duty. It's fantastic stuff lots of research on it. It's very safe for humans dogs most animals. It's hard on fish.
It's hard on the amphibians.
And it's a little bit hard on cats, too.
So you want to make sure it dries before fluffy gets a you know gets onto your clothing
But it lasts two to three weeks once you've sprayed it on and it'll even last a washing or two so it's really neat stuff
And it protects you from the ticks that get on your clothing that you were gonna take home with you now
They're dead instead of crawling around the floor of your house or your car
Neat stuff, huh?
Number two
Use DEET or Picaridin. DEET has been around for a long time. We've all heard about it. It is safe
Okay, according to everything that I read DEET is totally safe if you're using it as listed on the instructions.
Picaridin a little bit newer. It's also been found to be super super safe
It's not greasy like DEET and that it doesn't degrade plastics, so it's got a real advantage
It's a lot easier on your sunglasses say that and DEET would be
These are repellents they don't kill the ticks, but they do work for mosquitoes
There's some indication that they work well for black flies and other biting insects
Deep and picaridin are both out there
Good stuff give those a try so you got the extra repellent in addition to the permethrin that we just talked about
All right, see what for your hike you just came back
What's the next thing you need to do?
Take a shower you want to wash off any bugs that you didn't get with the bug repellent, okay?
And then you want to do a full-body scan and make sure that you didn't miss anything
the nymphs
There's little teeny tiny
Jerks of ticks okay?
They're about the size of a poppy seed so look carefully and make sure that you get them all.
Now you've had your shower
What's next the next thing is to check your gear
You don't want any hitchhikers. Right? They're on your clothing that hanging out in the house
So take your gear throw it in the dryer on high for about 10 minutes
Don't blame me if you get anything too hot make sure that everything that goes in there can handle it for the 10 minutes
But that's gonna be like the sauna from Hell for ticks. They won't survive it
They're gonna hate their life as short as it's going to be
And you also want to check your pets and make sure that they don't have any hitchhikers on them as well
Stay ultra vigilant remember ticks can drop off in the car they can drop off at home
It's another really good reason to use that permethrin and make sure that that they're dead when they come in contact with your clothing
What happens if all of your prevention fails or you know you just thought hey? I'm just gonna go walk this grassy field
It's nice out
I'll chance it in. And you lose. Okay, when they get attached there's a few things that you can do
Basically want to pull them off very carefully very slowly with fine tip tweezers
don't believe in any of the old wives tales right, the
Smothering it and vaseline or using nail polish or any of that stuff. Ticks don't really necessarily back themselves out
Okay, just go ahead pull them out carefully, slowly. Read up on it. If you're not sure if you got to get some medical help
you know whatever the case is you don't want to leave any parts behind that can cause infection
I have a little more detail on this and the blog and on the website check that out as well
So there you have it some handy tips on how to stay safe in the outdoors and tick free
Hopefully . . . so nothing's 100%
But hopefully this will reduce your chances of getting bit by ticks and get to enjoy the outdoors the weather is amazing.
Ooo that is rough on the camera angle isn't it but look at that view all right? See y'all on the trail. Have a great day
