where the mouse is highlighted?
Or the camera zooms in to highlight a specific area
that you're talking about?
I got this question from a career coach named Dane.
He left it down in the comments of a previous video.
In this video, I'll show you and Dane
how to direct your audience's attention
with highlighting and zooming in.
And hey, during this little intro,
why don't you click down below on the subscribe button?
(upbeat music)
My favorite software to do this is ScreenFlow.
But it's Mac only.
Camtasia is the closest thing for you PC folks.
Let's jump into ScreenFlow.
So I'm gonna pretend that there's something I wanna record
for a video inside Creator Studio in YouTube.
So I'm gonna start out by going to ScreenFlow.
And opening ScreenFlow.
And I got another video that shows you
how to do this in Camtasia if you're on a PC
or if you're like Camtasia better.
I personally like ScreenFlow better.
But it's a personal choice.
And you can start by going to a new recording
and then choosing what you want to record.
So if you had your iPhone plugged in,
you could potentially record from that.
You can record video from any webcam that's plugged in,
and you can record audio from the,
you know, if you wanna record your voice as you're speaking.
You can record that here
and choose from the different microphones
that are attached to your computer.
So you can also record the computer audio
in case you're like, there's music in the background
or something that's being played in the computer
so it's not coming out your computer speakers
and then into your microphone and back into the computer.
But I'm not gonna do that right now.
So I'm just gonna record the audio of my voice
and the desktop.
I will then,
I can select how big of an area I want to record,
but I usually just do the full screen
and then
cut things down later.
'Cause I'd rather just have extra stuff to work with
in post when I'm editing.
So I will push the red button
and it's gonna give me a little countdown here.
It's gonna tell me what I'm recording,
it's my desktop and my built-in microphone,
so I can confirm what I'm doing.
And there we go.
Now if you look in the,
up here, in the upper right,
you'll notice that there's a little video camera
with a dot in it.
And that is telling you that this is ScreenFlow.
And that we've been recording for about 10 seconds.
You can stop or pause,
do a number of things there.
But typically what I do is I get down here,
I get ready, take a deep breath,
and start recording.
So I'm just gonna go through
and just pretend as if I was recording something.
For a future video.
So once you're inside,
Creator Studio,
I want you to go down to analytics.
And then I want you to notice here,
where it shows views.
And that's gonna be the extent of the video that I record.
I'm gonna go up here and hit Stop Recording.
And it's gonna pull up ScreenFlow
and it's gonna do a couple of things.
One is it puts the recordings,
the different elements up here in the upper right,
in the, it's called a media bin.
It puts them down here on the timeline.
So it starts to build your video for you.
And what you're seeing up here,
this is the viewer.
So this is showing you what's going to play
on the viewer's screen at the end
when you export this video.
So let's start out down here.
And take a look.
You'll see there's the microphone, and the screen recording.
So you can get these out of sync
by you know, taking one and dragging it over.
So you wanna keep everything together.
But you'll notice here that the microphone
shows when I'm speaking and when I'm silent.
So it's an easy way for you
to kind of choose the spots that are,
that you want to pick for the final recording.
Let's go in here, so the recording.
This is the visuals down here,
and this is the audio up here.
So we're probably gonna go to the visuals
and just kind of scroll forward.
So once you're inside.
So this is where the real video starts.
So I'm gonna clip off all the rest of that.
And then I'm gonna move everything over.
So we've got this here,
So once you're inside, Creator Studio,
I want you go to down to analytics.
So you can see here we've got the whole screen showing
and really we're wanting to show something like analytics,
the kind of the small thing there.
So there's a couple of ways to do that.
So I'm gonna highlight the screen recording
then go back into the upper right.
This is kinda the inspector.
So there's a couple of ways to do this.
Actually I'm gonna show you probably three different ways.
So the first off is the most simple.
And you'll click here on the,
kind of the mouse icon.
And get the callout window.
And you can add an action to the screen.
So let's add an action.
And you can see here, that it's added down here
this yellow area.
And you can make it longer, shorter, or move it around.
But that's where this action is gonna take place.
And you can see the action that we added
was follow the mouse cursor around.
And highlight it.
And then,
and then I want you to notice here,
where it shows views.
Okay, so you can see how that worked.
It's following the mouse around.
Pretty simple, just put it on,
and you can follow the mouse around and see your.
Your audience can see exactly where you're pointing.
So that's kinda level one.
You can also go in here and control this.
So you can do things like,
you know what, I want that to be zoomed up.
So when something, whatever's underneath the cursor,
that's gonna be extra big,
and maybe I want an outline around it.
So that is easier to see.
You can add a shadow to this
and kind of, you know, use your own judgment
as to how you want this to look.
You can also do things
like change the opacity of the background.
Like right here,
what it's doing is graying out the background
to make it easier to see and highlight a certain area.
But you don't need to do that.
You can turn off the opacity.
You could also blur out the area where the mouse is.
So this is good when you're doing something
that you want to not show on your screen.
I'll show you that in a second, actually.
Or you can blur out the background
so people aren't seeing.
Are only seeing in focus the one are you're highlighting.
So that is a great way to do that.
So that's the most simple.
Is to just show your screen
and add a callout action to follow the mouse around.
I'm gonna delete that.
And we'll start with the next version.
So the next way to do it
is to go in and actually zoom in.
So I'm gonna click on now the video icon up here.
And once again, add an action.
And you'll see that it's,
this is the action.
It's a shorter thing now.
Because what it's doing is it's animate,
it's gonna animate this.
So at the beginning of this action,
this is what the screen looks like.
And at the end of the this action,
if I pull over there,
I want it to look a little different.
So I'm gonna go and just scale this up.
And I'll move it over too.
Kinda center it.
So now you can see how that works.
If I push play.
And then I want you.
So that was pretty simple.
It just really helps 'cause then the viewer's able
to see the entire area that you're talking about
and really be able to read things.
So I definitely like this option
and I use it a lot in my videos.
So there is a third way to do this.
What this is is zooming in on a certain area of the screen.
So it's a kind of a combination of the both of 'em.
And this can be kinda cool too.
So we're gonna go back to that callout.
We're gonna add the action.
And just see where it adds.
But this time we're gonna to say I want a free hand,
and I'm gonna draw the area
using the square up here.
I'm gonna draw this
draw an area that I want to zoom in.
And I'll, hopefully you'll be able to see
how this is different from that last one.
So let's say this is the area that we're really focusing on.
So you know the first thing you can do
is just have it go like that.
You know, just gray out the entire background.
And the same things apply
in terms of how much you wanna gray out the background.
But you can also,
what I like to do is zoom that up.
And get it about as big as the screen.
So that way, they can really see that area.
But they're still seeing the entire screen around it.
And what you can do is change this build
to just, you know, like 0.1 or 0.2,
and I'll show you what that looks like.
So it looks like the zoom is happening on your screen.
And then I want.
So you see how it kind of like zoomed into that area?
Where it shows views.
And it zoomed back out.
So I think that's probably the best option
to really provide the most value.
And you might be doing this with PowerPoint
or on a website, or with a piece of software.
Whatever you're doing to share your
whatever's on your computer.
That's three great ways to kinda follow the mouse around
and zoom in, and direct people's attention.

your positive messages.
